Matilda Of Flanders Timeline of a Conquering Queen

When the Duke, William of Normandy, came knocking at her door, Matilda of Flanders was far from impressed. Firstly she thought she could do better than this young whippersnapper and the son of a lowly tanners daughter. Although William pressed Matilda, she didn't care; in fact, her eyes were on someone else. However, the timeline would change, and this once-unimaginable couple became one when the marriage occurred in 1053. After William the Conqueror had stormed England at Hastings in 1066, he would send for his wife to be pronounced as Queen. Her quest to achieve greatness was complete; surely only happy days now lay ahead for this French powerhouse!? In this short documentary, we'll uncover the Queen's life and death along with the skills she required to tame her barons, children and husband.

Mathilde learned from the best. Her father Count Baldwin V played King Henri, Edward the Confessor, Harold Godwinson, King Heinrich III of the HRE & all of Holland with temperate alliances & marriages

She was a great woman but cruel too, killing his long lost love after twenty years. That's extreme. Though queens and kings were ought to be ruthless. Thanks for the great video.

Wonder if you will be doing a video on Rollo, the first Norman Duke and former Viking. How he and his wife got together and the start of their marriage was quite fascinating. She didn't like him at all, called him a Animal. Yet they ended up having a good, strong marriage. I believe he was William's Grandfather or Great Grandfather. I do know he is one of my ancestors, just as Robert and William were as well. Thank you for uploading this about Matilda . I for one and sick of hearing about the Tudors to be honest with you.

Thanks Jon. Nice little video summing up Matilda of Flanders. Considering info and images are sparse, you made the best of what little you had to go on. Your efforts are appreciated.
There are endless onscreen depictions and documentaries about the Tudors for example but next nothing on medieval monarchs like Matilda who are just as interesting but severely underrated and overlooked. Queens like Matilda may have been pious and graceful but that also appear to have been strong forces of nature.
Thanks again Jon 😉👏

Well, I hope we are going to hear more about William the Conqueror and his family, including his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, they were quite a lively lot ;) ;) ;) And if you tell their stories with the same passion you had for Tudors, it's going to be a real treat! <3

She was tiny but powerful. Great story.

I had heard she was 4'8", but not 4'2". Modern women are routinely 5'0"... so, it makes sense that 1000 years ago they'd be about 4'8" as the shortest little gals of their time. Always enjoy your videos.. thank you, Jon!!

Some years ago while visiting Bayeux to see the tapestry, we stayed in a small hotel named Reine Mathilde. Bayeux is a wonderful old town and I think the tapestry is one of the best presented artefacts I’ve ever seen.

Omg! This video has existed for a whole year and I no idea. 🎉😊 to be honest, though the year 2023 has sucked SO hard. Please forgive my language, Professor. Another awesome video about an often overlooked (in terms of medieval Queens and/or Queen Consorts its all Tudor, Tudor, Tudor it seems with this topic) Professor, Was it true he pulled her off her horse by her long braid? 😮

I wonder if the ‘beating’ that she given, was that they got caught in a bit of nooky in the forest and had to come up with an excuse very quickly….

Of course Henry I of France wasn't amused... Mathilda of Flanders was his niece... Mathilda named her youngest son- later King Henry I of England- after her uncle...
