ROPE film analysis. In this video, I will show how Alfred Hitchcock uses time, the light of an open window, and the bruised vanity of a beautiful woman to tell a story in this single-shot masterpiece based on the 1928 murder of a 14 year old boy named Bobby Franks by teenagers Richard Loeb and Nathan Leopold from Kenwood situated on Lake Michigan in Chicago’s South Side.

Rope is based on a story by Hume Cronyn and the script is by Arthur Laurents. The film stars James Stewart, John Dall, Joan Chandler, Cedrick Hardwicke, Farley Granger, Constance Collier, Douglas Dick, Edith Evanson, and Dick Hogan.

What I really love about your channel is that you always have such interesting thoughts and insights. It doesn't matter whether I've seen the movie you're talking about a thousand times or never even heard of it before, I'm always interested in hearing about your take on it. This is such a great film analysis.
I've literally been going through so many film analyses trying to get a clear, concise yet detailed, breakdown of a film.
I am a student with a film analysis project, and I was looking for an example of how to convey the analysis through verbal format - not written format. This is so helpful, thank you!

I've seen this movie many times and consider myself a Hitchcock fan. This is probably my favorite Hitchcock movie. Your insights are spot on. I appreciate the review. Glad to find others out there who appreciate this movie as much as I do.

Great analysis. As a 23 year old, im grateful that I watch film like this because it’s so much better than action heavy CGI stimulation roller coaster. This whole movie is like a lesson in how to write compelling characters and have perfect suspense throughout. Definitely a little slow for my generation. But it’s worth it. For people my age that get bored easily, try to appreciate the beauty of the set, amazing visuals with technicolor, and dialogue and you will eventually find yourself in a very compelling plot that you will want to watch again. It’s one of those that you’ll be amazed at how good a simple story and setting can be.

I love this movie probably my favourite hitchock I enjoy dial m for murder and I forget the movie rear window? that's good too. It's like 12 angry men. As in set in 1 location with conflict. Allowing the audience to never leave that area and figure out what is happening. Extremely smart and doesn't insult us.

Just started watching Rope and found this review. Instantly subscribed and can't wait to see more of your film analysis. Alfred Hitchcock was so ahead of his time. A master in filmmaking.

I know he was the Master Of Suspense TM. But I think William Friedkin actually topped the Master with his rope bridge sequence in Sorcerer.
Never been on the edge of my seat more than with that sequence.

I recently rewatched Rope twice. It had been some time since I had seen it. The pacing is interesting -- highlighted by exciting protractions. And unlike most films the murder is performed at the beginning. Thank you for your insights.

Just make sure Sorcerer gets priority. I just hope it does not interrupt your schedule cause I think it potentially could. It’s one that stays with you like an oil stain that won’t wash off.

Good review. I'm a fellow Lifeboat fan. What I also found interesting is that the NYC skyline in the window seems a little off. Looks like some of the buildings along Central Park West alongside some of the buildings in the financial district.

Great video ! Another great Hitchcock film dealing with a corpse is The Trouble with Harry; the film is possibly the most beautifully shot movie I’ve ever seen in my life
