It wasn't a condition, it was psychic abilities she passed down to her children. Gwen gets premonitions and finn can communicate with the dead. Remember when he asked if the phone rang for the other victims? They said it did but none of them could hear it. It obviously drove their mother to take her own life

Her back story wasn’t meant to push the plot forward it was meant to give meaning to why the father hates her abilities and drinks

Both kids shared a part of their mother’s gift. That’s why their power did not consume them. Gwen had the visions in the form of dreams. Finn developed the ability to see dead people who spoke to him. Their mother had both powers and that made her to lose her mind and kill herself. In a way the sense of purpose made the kids to make a good use of those abilities. For Gwen it was to find her brother. For Finn is was to survive and stick for himself.

they kinda left the mom's story slightly open in a way that it doesn't exactly confirm she WAS psychic, but doesn't confirm she WASNT. personally, im leaning towards her being psychic and she just couldn't handle the burden of being able to talk to spirits and have premonitions through dreams. it ended up driving her insane and she killed her, which then passed her powers on to finney and gwen respectively. its very heavily complied that their dad started drinking and being physically abusive after their mom died because of how hard it was trying to take care of her in such a terrible state. and the reason he was so against gwen talking about her premonitions is because he's afraid he's going to lose his daughter the same way he lost his wife. it absolutely does NOT justify his abusive behaviors at all, it just explain it. at least at the end of the movie/when finney goes missing he realizes the way he's been treating them is terrible and wants to do better to show he does love them and is scared to lose them like their mother

My pet peeve of this movie is how Vance didn’t beat the hell out of the grabber, like how did he get kidnapped in the first place?

My biggest issue is how did the grabber kidnap and kill3d Vance when he could literally overcome two adult cops (as Gwen in the movie said).
I mean - yeah, the grabber was older than him, but Vance wasn't weak.

You can thirst after Ethan Hawke but Jesus Christ this guy was heavily inspired by people like John Wayne Gacey and committed horrific crimes on children.

Part 2 BETTER be a prequel! This movie needed wayyy more scenes with The Grabber & his backstory too

What i would have liked is the backstory of the grabber or why is was killing people.. also why he didn't want to show his face...like when his mask was removed by Finn, he was very scared but the face looked fine...

I believe that this “condition” she had was actually psychic abilities. She was made out to be crazy and only lost her mind because everyone made her out to be. That would surely drive someone to madness. Instead of helping her admire that piece of her, their dad kept denying her gift and claiming it to be hysteria. The mom had the ability to hear/speak to the dead (the voices that Finn spoke to in the room he was locked in) and she could also communicate via dreams (Gwen’s nightmares and dreams having ACTUAL meaning). This is what I assumed from the little details we got.

I think it’s just one of those things that can really bother someone if they think about it too much.

I think it explained the kids’ powers. I saw a comment on another video where someone said the mom was clairvoyant and clairaudient. Each kid inherited a power. I think the mother offed herself because she couldn’t handle it, which led to the father being abusive. Both kids used their powers to not only catch the killer, but also to overcome the abuse they were going through at home.

Gwen AND FINNEY had the same “gift” that their mother had. They could see and talk to spirits. That was made obvious when the ghosts told Finney that no one had answered the phone before until him. Finney, Gwen, and their mother could see and speak to spirits and had a psychic/supernatural gift. That was made extremely obvious in the film so I’m not sure how you didn’t get that.

Keeping in mind this movie takes place in the 70s, I think their mother was seen as crazy (perhaps with schizophrenia) but, actually, had a gift. There was not a lot of researching abilities or exposure to either mental health or ESP back then so...

With that in mind, and the fact this is a thriller, their mother may have killed herself because she did have a "gift" that involved dark issues and she passed her gifts to her kids: Gwen's dark dreams and Finn's ability to hear and speak to dead people. Since her mother might not have been able to tell what was real and that they may have been angry voices she heard, that may have resulted in her suicidal actions.

When their dad said "You are not your mother, " "The same goes for you" (to Finn), and then his talk with Gwen later, he knows they are showing the same abilities as their mother and it scares him because that seems to be what lead to her committing suicide and he doesn't want his kids to follow suit.
