My brother has been living in Germany for over 30 years and speaks German like a native. However, because he has had little opportunity to speak English since he moved there, he has forgotten some it. He is still fluent in English, but there are gaps in his vocabulary. It's usually just small words that he forgets. The point is, as Yumi said, you need to keep practising speaking a language, or you will forget it. Even if it's your mother tongue, you can still forget.

I had basic Japanese class in college (mandatory sub) . I was the only one with the full mark (actually beating 2 of the class geniuses lol) . It wasn't because I was learning diligently. It was because of anime and I kid you not. I've been watching anime and Chinese dramas since I was 7. My brain could understand what needed to be understood. Also in college, I had a lot of Chinese speaking friends (there's was about 5 non Chinese speaker including me but I could understand Cantonese due to TVB lol). So my friends would speak Cantonese whenever they're with me so they won't need to "translate" again hahah(of course I would reply in Malay lol). I got into Korean stuff about 10 years ago.. Never in my life I would ever want to learn Hangul because there were subs lol. But I was curious there were some pop up words that wasn't translated....so I self taught how to read them just so I could write them on Google Translate hahahaha... It took me 4 days to learn the alphabets and read them. It does help that I'm currently working in a hospitality field... I can brush up all languages. I guess you need some sort of interest for you to be invested in a language. Take your time and see where it takes you.
