JustAnswer Customer from Provincetown, MA: Hi I have a Generac LP3250 portable that I use rarely and start up 2x a year.
JustAnswer Customer from Provincetown, MA: This year it won't start.
JustAnswer Customer from Provincetown, MA: I checked plug, filter, oil.
JustAnswer Customer from Provincetown, MA: All look good.
JustAnswer Customer from Provincetown, MA: Any suggestions?
Pearl Wilson: Assistant: Do you have fuel in the tank?
Pearl Wilson: Assistant: If so, is the shut-off valve open and the fuel clean?
JustAnswer Customer from Provincetown, MA: Yes
Pearl Wilson: Assistant: Do you plan on doing the work yourself?
JustAnswer Customer from Provincetown, MA: Yes
Pearl Wilson: Assistant: Anything else we should know to help you best?
JustAnswer Customer from Provincetown, MA: Sounds like gas is flowing, even when not started.
JustAnswer Customer from Provincetown, MA: Is that normal?
Hank F.: Technician: Hello, my name is * * I am going to assist you with this.
Hank F.: Technician: What are the item number and serial number of the genset?
JustAnswer Customer from Provincetown, MA: It's a Generac LP3250, which I think they discontinued.
JustAnswer Customer from Provincetown, MA: It's their model(#) #-#and it uses a standard 20lb LPG tank, like for a grill.
JustAnswer Customer from Provincetown, MA: The problem is the regulator.
JustAnswer Customer from Provincetown, MA: It's hissing, so leaking.
JustAnswer Customer from Provincetown, MA: I took it apart, but there's not much to do.
JustAnswer Customer from Provincetown, MA: When I reassembled it worked!
JustAnswer Customer from Provincetown, MA: So maybe it sealed.
JustAnswer Customer from Provincetown, MA: Stopped hissing and the generator started.
JustAnswer Customer from Provincetown, MA: But after I put the unit back together it started leaking again and it won't start.
JustAnswer Customer from Provincetown, MA: I think I may try gasket sealer.
JustAnswer Customer from Provincetown, MA: They have a replacement regulator but its $400!.
JustAnswer Customer from Provincetown, MA: I assume because they have very few.
JustAnswer Customer from Provincetown, MA: I could buy a new gas generator for that.
JustAnswer Customer from Provincetown, MA: I've been researching replacements and have a few leads.
JustAnswer Customer from Provincetown, MA: The generator is good, just need a regulator.
Hank F.: Technician: Yes, the regulator is expensive.
Hank F.: Technician: That is because it is not a normal regulator.
Hank F.: Technician: Instead of being just a pressure regulator, it is a combination pressure/demand regulator.
Hank F.: Technician: In addition to reducing tank pressure down to a usable level, it must also provide the proper volume according to the needs of the engine.
Hank F.: Technician: Using a regulator not designed for this unit could lead to over-fueling the engine, and creating an explosion hazard.
JustAnswer Customer from Provincetown, MA: Thanks.
JustAnswer Customer from Provincetown, MA: I'm going to try and seal it, and if that doesn't work I can't see spending that.
JustAnswer Customer from Provincetown, MA: Will probably go to a gasoline model.
JustAnswer Customer from Provincetown, MA: Hi.
JustAnswer Customer from Provincetown, MA: So I tested the regulator for leaks and it was leaking a bit, but that may just have been from my disassembly.
JustAnswer Customer from Provincetown, MA: I tightened it up water tested it and it's sealed.
JustAnswer Customer from Provincetown, MA: So its delivering LPG to the carburetor as soon as I open the tank valve.
JustAnswer Customer from Provincetown, MA: That's what I first noticed as different.
JustAnswer Customer from Provincetown, MA: So maybe the regulator is supposed to hold back until it gets a vacuum signal from the carb or something?
JustAnswer Customer from Provincetown, MA: I actually got it to start once or twice, but that's because the tank safety valve had tripped.
JustAnswer Customer from Provincetown, MA: It ran a second then died.
JustAnswer Customer from Provincetown, MA: So I guess its "flooding" due to the unregulated flow.
JustAnswer Customer from Provincetown, MA: I work on gasoline motorcycle engines, but not familiar with LPG.
JustAnswer Customer from Provincetown, MA: Maybe I can recover this if I get a complete conversion kit for the regulator/carb?
Hank F.: Technician: Gasoline and LP both have advantages and disadvantages.
Hank F.: Technician: You just have to weigh the pros and cons both ways, and apply them to your situation.
Hank F.: Technician: Thank you for using Just Answer, and please take a moment to rate my assistance.
Hank F.: Technician: And yes, the regulator should not free flow.
Hank F.: Technician: It is a demand regulator, and is not supposed to flow gas until the engine calls for it.
