Respiratory depression is a risky complication of sedation. Nurses can play a major role in preventing life-threatening respiratory depression through systematic sedation assessments. How do you know if your sedated patient is in the right zone or at the correct level of sedation? Using a sedation assessment scale can be convenient, easy and inexpensive.

The use of a simple sedation scale is recommended to ensure that the healthcare team 'speak the same language' regarding the intensity of the patient's sedation. In addition, a sedation scale can lead nurses to make informed decisions that maximize patient safety during opioid administration.

Sedation scales also give clinical guidance to nurses regarding the management of advancing sedation. In order to appropriately titrate and balance sedation in the ICU, several monitoring and assessment tools have been devised over the years. Sedation scales provide healthcare professionals with a standardized way of accurately documenting patient status, to allow for accurate titration of sedation therapy to meet established clinical goals/ranges, and to optimize patient comfort and safety.
