My daughter (whom we adopted) is blind and autistic. My husband was permanently disabled by a work accident. The Apts we can afford are not handicap accessible. For me to use the bathroom or to assist my daughter in the bathroom, I have to get myself out of my chair, and crawl to the bathroom. The cabinets are too tall. Its very frustrating. I pray everyday that we will be able to find a home that is handicap accessible and has a yard for my daughter to play and learn how to grow a vegetable garden.

Please define 'disability.' Are the programs you mention only for people with physical disabilities? What about mental health issues? I have a friend with incapacitating depression who has been on Medicaid and housing assistance for decades but just received a small inheritance (enough to buy a used car and some clothes) and thereby has been thrown off assistance. Once she spends this money, she is allowed to reapply, but it is not guaranteed that she will regain Medicaid or housing. I have another friend who has PTSD from military service, and while she gets her health care from the VA, money is tight. She paid for her own service dog and worries what will happen when this dog becomes too old.
