Using cooperative care training, also known
as consent-based handling to make applying ointment stress free for dogs. The key was starting with a chin rest, which helped him remain still and relaxed. This method ensures the experience is gentle, stress-free, and based on trust.

I swear we don't give enough credit to dogs for doing something they don't enjoy.

It's so important to explain stuff to dogs as best they can understand.
Like my dog hated wearing dog shoes, but also hated walking on road salt during winter.
So, I wouldn't try to get her adjusted to wearing the shoes inside where it would feel arbitrary or like a punishment, I started trainer her with the shoes during the worst part of winter so she could immediately feel the difference between walking on ice and salted sidewalks without the shoes, and then compare to it with the shoes.

Like there's a number of instances where you can't really educate them of why you're doing something, like for instance, it wasn't until my dog had a flea infestation and was bathed with anti flea shampoo and felt the immediate relief that she really started to understand why she gets a bath.

But giving your dog the dignity of an explanation they can understand really goes a long way when it comes to trust and communication.

My black lab would come to me if her ears hurt bc she knew I’d fix her by cleaning them and applying her medicine. She’d walk me over to where we kept the meds and she’d sit and wait for her treat afterwards. She was just the best ❤️🐾

THIS!! Thank you so much for sharing. Its so refreshing seeing people do this. Most animals have the ability to show consent if you just knew what to look for!! Even my reptiles show it clearly

Look at that little face! He’s so precious waiting for his eye ointment! What a good boy! Good job mom for not traumatizing that sweet angel!

People need to realize animals like being an active participant in their care. Like that one horse girl who has a rescue horse. She taught the mare how to consent to being groomed and be an active participan in her care. It's really cool to see. Props to you for letting your dog consent

We put similar ointment in my cat's eyes twice a day. She knows she gets food after we put in the cream so she sits, puts her head up when we touch her chin and lets us put them in and then jumps straight to her bowl and gets fed. I love seeing how you do it with your dog, he must know the drops make him feel better
