It also makes sense for her to have a different bending style. Since she didnt learn earth bending the traditional way. She learned it from the Badger-moles

I love Toph's fighting style. It being distinct from other earthbenders emphasized not only how Toph herself, a blind girl, interacts with the world differently, but also her power and individuality. Toph is a true earthbender at heart, she stubbornly refuses convention and helplessness, and chooses her own path toward strength.

When you thought Toph couldn't get any cooler. You learn the writers did their homework.

in the show canonically the reasen her bending is different from other earth benders, is because she was traind by beagermoles WHO where the furst earth benders.

It's been years, but I still keep learning about ATLA's attention to detail.

You know I just realized. All of Aang's teachers are not the people you would expect or most of the people in their would would think of.
I love that.

In creator commentary of The Blind Bandit, they actually say that it it was a happy coincidence: they did not know that creation story until Sifu Manuel Rodriguez, the martial arts consultant brought in specifically for Toph, told them.

"This was done on purpose"
Duh, they way she bends was specifically stated to be uniqe. It was what Aang would need if he was to learn to earthbend, he needed her form, her style. She and she alone was the only person who could teach him.

There aren’t any original Chinese sources backing up that southern praying mantis was invented by a blind woman, only English ones, so the validity of it is debated.

Always loved ATLA, even the fact that they had the animators learn the different styles of martial arts so they could animate them properly was awesome. Gonna rewatch this now

I love how much eye and soul they had for ATLA, the depth of every character en their natural chemistry together. I love the depth of their purpose and spirituality.

"Legend has it that it was created by a blind woman." So she's based on a *legend*.

Of everything with Toph, The fact that her blindness was one of her greatest assets and never brought up as a weakness is also very beautifully done, she's had moments where she was out of her element or we get the jokes but even there she persevered and everyone in the gang just forgets she's blind, especially the scene where Azula had to point out that their plan was to give the blind girl the wheel of the airship

Glad they made her Aang's age too. Shows in universe that what she teaches Aang is both original (both from the badgers and not the traditional bending) but that she's almost just as new to it, as well as being literally blind.

And its shown to be OP and more suitable for Aang since it used sensory connection to earth like spiritual connection to air.

Best way to show Aang that small & young can still be unique and strong.

Every time one of my friends shrugs off ATLA There’s so much I can point to but I always revert to the fact that they put so much details into everything. Each bending style has a martial arts specifically tied to it. And throughout the story you can see different people having their own unique takes. It’s just the extra effort other shows before it didn’t bother to do😭
