When EVs started to become a thing, I kept saying the transition should have been more subtle. This right here is exactly what I was talking about

I’ve always thought hybrids were the best compromise; with the ability to run full electric when available, or biodiesel, or kerosene when working remotely. No worries about running heat, air conditioning, APU, head lights, up hills, no real reduction in range, no worries about outside air temperature, etc. You can run any generator you want too like a rotary, turbine, traditional diesel, gasoline/ethanol ICE, turbocharged, etc they all have different benefits that should be examined.

Huge fan of the diesel hybrid idea. I changed out huge V16 Cats for a tiny 4 cylinder Cummins generator replenishing a battery bank on cranes and it works very well. Operators love the instant torque

This is great for dump trucks too. Some dump trucks mainly work in a quarry, dont do lots of miles. Full EV may work fine (gotta have e-pto tho). For the dump trucks running about all over town, not needing to idle all the time while loading is great. That idle destroys the after-treatment system

Wish these had been around 25 years ago when my father's mine was operating. They had an old 60s White (later White-GMC) dump truck. They'd bring 20 tons of ore from the mine to the mill, down about 2500 feet of elevation (800 meters in Canadianese) in ten miles, then go back up empty.

Probably wouldn't have ever needed to charge at all!

So stoked to be eventually watching these hybrid trucks roll out. Eagerly from there watching how long haul applications will follow from there. Bringing some classic iron back from their back field graveyards being the best part.

I would be very interested in a hybrid conversion kit for a Isuzu npr

Nice thing about constant RPM operation is you can really easily tune the intake and exhaust runner length for resonance. Pick that efficiency up even more just by having the right length... big boost on volumetric efficiency going in, extra scavenging headed out.

Get these going commercially and you could also cogen the power units for even more efficiency. Don't waste that heat, put it to use!

This is by far the best part of this truck. I’m looking at buying a Toyota Sienna Hybrid - I’m thinking that’ll just adding a whole crap ton of complexity and remove the ability (and right) to repair anything on it.

And when diesel engines are run has generators they maintain a constant RPM which improves efficiency.

I am still somewhat hesitant of and skeptical of EVs and hybrids, at least for my needs - however, yalls honesty and transparency has increased my interest significantly. I respect what yall are doing- matching needs, recycling, and retrofitting - much more than what most EV and hybrid makers are doing.

The diesel electric idea is great, locomotives have used for decades

I'm Alaskan, I don't really need a semi. But man I've always thought it would be cool to own one and do a pickup truck conversion on it. I would love to see an Edison motors semi with a pickup truck style bed. Get one of those as a daily driver.

I for one, think that what you are doing is awesome!

I want one, so now I just need to somehow justify a diesel-electric logging truck haha

I prefer the generator type, they don't need to be plugged in all the time and won't put any added strain on the electrical grid. Any future ideas on a different fuel type like LP or Compressed Fuel Gas?

I love this currently in college for diesel mechanics looking to relocate and focus on this

I think your hybrid is the way to go. Locomotives have been running that way and now most new large ships are going that way. Cool thing is you can switch out generators based on desired fuel. If hydrogen becomes a big thing, you can just substitute in hydrogen system in place of the diesel motor. Keep the truck, change the power source.

I like what your doing here. You took something effective, and made it effective and better for the environment.

This is the proper implementation of the Chevy Volt drivetrain concept.
