All the Loran stations, almost without exception, where isolated and remote and had to be manned by Coast Guard Radioman. Out of USCG radioman school the students "feared" being sent there because your life was over for about two years since there were generally not even small towns nearby. I was one of those students more than 40 years ago.

We had an ELF base a couple of hours from us in WI. It was used to send comunications to subs in the deep seas to surface and recieve orders. The original proposed a 22k miles of cable but ended up only using around 60 miles of cable per antenna all laid in precambian bedrock near the surface.
