I went through Army Basic Training at Ft. Dix, NJ in 1987. Ft. Dix was adjacent to McGuire AFB, which at the time was a home base for the C-141 transport aircraft. The 141 is the loudest airplane that I have ever heard, and I've been around most of them. Basic was eight weeks long, but the joke was that we could have done it in a month if the Drills had not had to stop talking every time one of the things took off or landed. Seventeen years later I was working flightline operations for the Army in Kuwait, and there it was, still in service and just as loud. In contrast, the C-17, a much newer aircraft, came and went at a comparative whisper.

Wow. That’s true. There is a live recording by Metallica of a song called “The Four Horsemen” at Castle Donington, UK, in 1985 where you can hear the sound of an airplane passing that overtakes most of the audio for a brief moment during the song.
