I think this is a good method for getting in the ballpark of shipping cost, but there's another way. If you know the weight and dimensions of your packaged item you can pass on the shipping discount directly to the buyer. Business Policies > Site Preferences > Shipping Preferences > Offer Carrier Specific Discounts for Buyers. If you enable this it will only charge the buyer what their actual cost of shipping is. Works well for items that have consistent packaged dimensions. If you want to make money off your shipping you can still add a handling fee.

This was confusing. The idea may be great but the way you showed it was too fast and at one point you had directions but you couldn't see your cursor and know what it was exactly you were doing. You might start and end with a simplified explanation of what you are doing.
Ex: "I am going to show you how to get a decent ship rate on your listing. I will be reducing the shipping rate but still not losing money. " (This is an odd concept and I didn't grasp it). Pause after one or 2 seconds of a maneuver. Sometimes people are taking notes. Maybe go back and repeat. Explain why you are clicking on something. Everyone isn't brilliant like you!

Loving the videos.. Now on the 12x12x12 will charge more for international.. I had a customer in Australia order a ceramic cow figure, after I mentioned I had more available he tried to buy it but his shipping was ridiculous till I did actual size then it cut it in half.. So you may not get as many international sales if you do that.. But I could totally be wrong, just my experience

Typically if an item is over 12x12x12 I flip it to parcel select or UPS. Am I the only one that doesn't use USPS priority for packages over 1cuft?

I have always went with free shipping, every time I list otherwise my sales tank, interesting that you do it that way.

Hey Jake, really love all the content you put out. So I'm running into a bit of an issue with the calculated shipping ending up costing me more using the method desrcibed in this video. I was shipping an item that, with packaging and everything, comes it an just under 10lbs. I did calculated shipping and put the dimensions at 12x12x14 when listing the item. Once it sold, I updated the dimensions to 13x13x13 (I wasn't sure what box I was going to ship it in at the time of listing), but the weight remained the same. The shipping I collected was over $1 short of what I ended up getting charged.

My question is, have things changed a bit since this came out 10 months ago? And also, should I figure out the box each item I sell is going to ship in PRIOR to listing so I can put the proper dimensions and weight the first time?

Maybe this works for you because the max cost difference for shipping from Utah to California is not that much? If I try to ship a large item to california from the midwest it's very expensive no matter what, so the shipping would swamp the value of the item. I have to charge them the real shipping value and the 12x12x12 quote from ebay would be a losing proposition for me.
