Hollow fiber filters for backpacking and thruhiking

Hollow fiber filters are our favorite type of water filter for making streams and lakes safe for drinking while backpacking. They are lightweight and durable, and they can be maintained in the field.

3 tips.

• The use of a cloth when collecting water, will significantly extend the life of your filter.
• If it clogs up after a long storage and little use, soften up the filter for a couple of hours in water.
• Blow air out of the filter til it's empty of water and store it in your freezer. Frost will prevent build up of nasty fungi, and blowing out the water will prevent the filter from damage.

Life straws!!! When I was 15 I hiked 14 miles to the top of mist falls in Sequoia Kings Canyon national forest, drank right out of the top of the waterfall. Great memory

The 1st video i watched of them, they had so much hate on that video from trolls. But I liked their video alot. Their travel videos seem like really helpful for other travellers.

You guys amaze me in every way. Your dehydration way of preparing foods are also important. As I've said in ALL my comments, my brother hiked the Appalachian from Georgia to Maine, and even tho he was somewhat prepared, he was no where near as prepared as you guys, BUT, he learned so much along the way. You guys need to do the Appalachian trail, he said it was such a life changing experience. Took about 4to5months, and this was in 2006.

These things are so cool. Growing up we had bleach and Nalgene bottles lol. Don't ever, ever assume water looks clean so it is clean, you'll regret it. I watched someone be sick with beaver fever before. That's giardiasis.

You get beaver fever drinking water downstream from a dam or lodge. Oh man. Projectile. Out both ends. Poor guy was wishing for death he was so sick and stuff just kept coming out of him even though he was getting weak and struggled to get up. You only need to see that once to never, ever drink straight from a water source.

If you don't have a life straw or something just put roughly 1 drop of bleach per 500 ml of water. Give it a really good shake and then let it sit before drinking it. If you have a canoe or go for a swim, get out into the deepest part of the water and scoop water an arm's length from the surface. It'll have the least amount of particulate.

Do the same for cooking water. I once ate a few bites of tuna helper someone made but they got the water from the shore. Full of sand. Disgusting lol. I went to bed hungry that night. If you can only access the shoreline then strain the water through a t-shirt or something first!

Yep! We use life-straws in Boy Scouts, but usually one scout brings a gravity fed filtration system for us all to use it’s really cool, here’s how it works.
You have a large sack, maybe a gallon, and some tubing that leads to a filter at the bottom of the sack. You fill up the sack with water, then hang it up on a tree, then the scouts cycle their bottles through the end of the tubing until we all get fresh water!

It’s crazy watching an at home video right after a indoors video. You can really see the change

You may want to carry some flocculant to make really dirty water into just dirty water and then filter that water. It will be less work and wear & tear on your filters. Just an idea im passing along that I used when on the AT.

I have a lifestraw gravity bag and theyre so useful. Can be a bit slow to get water out of but makes the backpack so much lighter when you only need to carry one bottle
