Using inorganic media with Orchids - Seramis & Hydroton

After some years of bark, sphagnum moss, coconut husk and other organic media for orchids, I feel it is time for a change.. for the better. I am switching to full inorganic media.

The two products I will use are Seramis and hydroton clay pellets. Both are clay based, non toxic and non bio degradable. This means no more repotting due to broken down media, no more tannin, no more burned roots due to acidity!

Seramis is very water retentive and very fast absorbent, it wicks water like nothing I have ever seen. Here are some past experiments:

Hydroton clay pebbles are widely used for hydroponics, but paradoxically are not as water retentive and not as fast absorbent. However they provide loads of ventilation and act as a filler, Seramis isn't the cheapest thing on the market.

Combining them can result in a very favorable medium for orchids, as it will let you control the air/moisture levels according to your environment, orchid and pot.

Hi Dani thank you so much for your great videos. I love watching the new ones & re-watching the old ones everyday... hehehe, I'm obsessed with your videos. Anyway, because of you, I just ordered seramis & plan on mixing it with my leca. You have such an influence to people like me, that I even ordered some orchids that you have :-)
Love your greenhouse, new camera, love the sink, etc. You're Awesome Dani !!!

They look so neat and pretty in the ceramis and the clay pots. I think the ceramis will work wonders during the summer time.

Hey Danni, I made the switch about 5 months ago to inorganic media and converted my entire collection to semi hydroponics. For me, and with the environmental factors where I live, it works amazingly! Much less maintenance and fuss, and a much more stable and uniform environment for the roots to grow and flourish...you're gonna love it! ps - I like the new intro to your vids and you've definitely stepped up your game with more professional demonstrations...nice work! 😊👍🏼

Loved this video, I am constantly unpotting my orchids to check on them. I know I am not supposed to, but I am very gentle with them. This media, I like the seramis, will make it so much easier! And it doesn't look like bugs or mold will be a problem with these types of media. Thank You :)

Awesome videos! Thanks for taking the time to go into detail about it, there isn't so much info out there on this product. I have just got a big bag of the small granual seramis which is the houseplant mix, but I also got the special orchid substrate from seramis! Waiting for it to arrive which should hopefully be Monday. I'll make a video about it as I'm gonna try converting my orchids to inorganic. Having such sucky luck using the bark mixes I can get locally and now I have fungus gnats! So pretty much done with organic medium at this point, it's beyond frustrating.

I am in the process of moving to inorganic media as well (bark attracts too many insects for me!). I have started with semi-hydro as an experiment but I would prefer to water the way I used to. I would love a video showing some Seramis/hydroton potting mix recipe suggestions for common genera like cattleya, miltoniopsis, oncidiums and phals to help an inorganic media beginner get going - not much online about this. I intend to conduct some experiments in my home too, as doing this seems to have worked wonders at making your set up work for you.

Hello! You have given us so many great ideas and tutorials over the years. Congratulations on acquiring HD recording equipment. The visual quality is excellent.
I also want to know if larger granule pumice is on par with seramis.
