How to join a Windows 10 machine to a domain. Video #7 in the Server Basics 2016 video series, we show the quick and easy way to join a Windows 10 client to a domain.

A lot of people get stuck at this part within a virtual machine test lab environment. In this video, I show you how to make this work.

First thing you need to do is verify you can ping the server from the client by pinging the server’s hostname. If you can’t ping it by hostname, you are not going to be able to join the client to the domain. So many people get stuck at this point in a virtual test lab.

Set the DNS entry on the client computer to be the server’s IP.

Press the Start button, then type “domain“. Click Rename your PC or join a domain.

On the About page, select Join a domain under Organization

Type in the domain name (you don’t have to type the “.internal” part). Click Next.

You will be asked for domain credentials. Use your domain admin account credentials.
You will then be prompted to restart. Restart the computer.

When you are ready to log into the computer, select Other User in the bottom-left. If you don’t do this, you will be logging in locally to the computer rather than the domain.
Use your domain user credentials to log in.

Open up Active Directories Users and Computers on the server.
Drag-n-drop the newly joined client computer object from the default Computers OU to the OU where this computer is physically going to be located.

I have a question, how do I setup windows 10 to authenticate into the domain when logging into the windows 10 client. We use RDP to log into the term server from the clients.
But I would like to see my network resources on the client at startup.

Great Tutorial..
I am having problem joining the domain.. server IP is fine so is the server name abserver when pinging..
AD DS error: the DNS server waiting for AD DS to signal that the initial syncro of the directory has been completed. The DNS server can not start until the initial synchro is completed becouse critical data might not yet be replicated onto this domain controller.
any idea? thanks

I hope you can help me out with this one. I have joined a Win10 to a domain but when the user logs in it says you aren't signed in. It logs them into a temp profile which in turn means all data saved onto that account will be deleted after in logs off. Any ideas on how to log in as usual like in Win7?

I did this, it gave the correct ip (10.0.2.100) but I can't ping the server or join the domain

I can't connect to my domain, I get the following error message:

"The following error occurred attempting to join the domain "domain name":
The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted."

Before anyone asks, yes, I have switched both VM's to NATnetwork.
I can ping my server by name and IP from the client computer but I can't ping the client PC from the server.

Hello! Great video series. I have followed all the videos. Unfortunately, I have gotten to the part where i cannot connect to the server. I can ping the IP of the server, oddly i can ping the computer name of the server and it works. I cannot ping the domain name, i receive Ping request could not find host jens_rack.(Little play on my wifes name:)) Please check the name and try again. I am actually creating this server on a real Poweredge r710 for a home server/lab. Any help would be great;y appreciated
