You can always tell when Glen loves something. You get the grin and the Glen happy dance. I won't mock you for loving this pie.

Has anyone else noticed, the comment sections on cooking shows are a virtual goldmine of food ideas in themselves, let alone the main show. Lots of good cooks out there chime in with some interesting ideas.

A bit of Almond Extract, 1/4 tsp, is common in cherry pie recipes. The pie dough trimmings in our house are always baked on a cookie sheet with a cinnamon and sugar sprinkle.

When I saw a bottle of Knudsen pure tart cherry juice in the refrigerator, I felt compelled to make this. I rehydrated, overnight, a blend of craisins/raisins (2/1) in the cherry juice, shot of brandy, sugar, corn starch, and 1/2 teaspoon of almond extract, which provides the decidedly cherry pie flavor to all baked things "cherry." Delicious results and a compelling facsimile to sincere cherry pie - in flavor, although texturally different, but unimportant. Julie is correct when she noted that raisins are rich to flavor and body.

I made a cranberry pie [no raisins] for the holidays one year and was surprised it makes the best tart dark cherry pie flavor. I didn't tell anyone what kind of pie it was and everyone loved it.

I was making a cherry pie last year out of frozen cherries and thought I had two bags when I only had one. Whoops. Not wanting the crust to go to waste I decided to throw in a bag of frozen cranberries and some extra sugar.

It was delicious!!! Now I add cranberries whenever I make a cherry pie. I love sweet and sour things and the cranberries add a bit of tart zing to the pie and actually seem to amplify the cherry flavor.

I guess we should have know this, having grown up on things like Ocean Spray Cran-Cherry drink.

Would a touch of almond extract make it more cherry-ish?

There is an old
"Don't mock it until you have tried it" and I think it fits here. It looks very nice and would be fantastic with some vanilla ice cream.
Take care everyone and stay safe,
Joe

Glen happy dance into discerning look at apparent cherry pie connoisseur Jules... you know it's going to be good.

“Should I be suspicious?”

We are nodding, Jules, nodding vigorously.

That said a cranberry pie sounds exquisite.

I love the looks of realisation on Jules' face when Glen tells her what the dish is.

The trimmed pie dough... don't waste it! Roll it out, cut into strips 1" wide, cut into pieces 3" long, a little butter, brown sugar (or white), and cinnamon. Bake. A great treat for the kids. Or let the kids prep it. Nothing goes to waste!

Looks great. Cranberry Pie is something that I’ll probably really like, but I’d never heard of any before. Raisins adding richness to the very tart cranberries makes a lot of sense.

I wonder if the reason cranberry pie never really entered the imagination is that folks were thinking of it as a substitute for cherries (thus superfluous once seasonal scarcity subsided), rather than a worthy pie in its own right.

My older brother called cherry pie a “blue moon pie” because our mom told him we could only afford one once in a blue moon!

WoW, fascinating! My wife has been craving cherry pie since Washington’s Birthday. Your Old Cookbook series is interesting, I love your research.
Thank you for all you do. It is always educational and entertaining when a new Glen and Friends notification pops up!
Nice was to start the first day of spring.

Glen, I discovered your channel last fall but as I'm pushing 70 it takes me forever to learn how to do all these computer dances. So I can now move to the subscribe, like and comment beat. I've been cooking since I was 12 inspired by our beloved Julia Child on PBS TV. Since then I've expanded into world cooking and love to see what substitutes I can do for things that might not be at hand. I love cherries and they do pop up in Oaxaca (where I've been since 1986) occasionally. But I love raisins And Cranberries (which also appear). I think this combo would work well on an upside down cake (without the liquid and more butter) The 1922 cookbook and comparison with others was informative. Keep up the good work CHEERS JIM

I am impressed with how that first piece of pie came out so neatly.
