Today on the channel, I'm finally checking out The Bee Gees & Chuck Berry doing a live version of Reelin' and Rockin from 1973 on The Midnight Special. There was so much talent on stage at the same time it was crazy! Chuck Berry put on such an amazing performance from guitar, vocal and a crowd engagement perspective. The Bee Gees were the absolute icing on the cake with their amazing vocals and they joined in on the dance moves as well! Bee Gees have incredible range, falsettos and down deep. They wrote over 1100 songs for themselves and other artists. First one out was Barry, the eldest brother. Then Robin, and last Maurice ( pronounced) Morris also called Mo. Robin and Mo were fraternal twins, 3 years younger than Barry. They started singing and performing together when the twins were 6 and Barry 9.

American singer, guitarist and songwriter who pioneered rock and roll. Nicknamed the "Father of Rock and Roll" " his break came when he traveled to Chicago in May 1955 and met Muddy Waters, who suggested he contact Leonard Chess, of Chess Records. With Chess, Berry recorded "Maybellene"—his adaptation of the country song "Ida Red"—which sold over a million copies, reaching number one on Billboard magazine's rhythm and blues chart. Chuck was about 30 years old then. Berry was among the first musicians to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on its opening in 1986; he was cited for having "laid the groundwork for not only a rock and roll sound but a rock and roll stance.... In 1944, Berry was convicted of armed robbery and sent to the Intermediate Reformatory for Young Men (now the Algoa Correctional Center) in Jefferson City, Missouri, where he formed a singing quartet and did some singing and the group became competent enough that the authorities allowed it to perform outside the detention facility. Berry was released from the reformatory on his 21st birthday in 1947. He did 2 more stints in prison. 3 years and again for 4 months.. Chuck played music and performed for the next 60 years..Rock critic Robert Christgau considers Berry "the greatest of the rock and rollers and John Lennon said, "if you tried to give rock and roll another name, you might call it 'Chuck Berry. Ted Nugent said, "If you don't know every Chuck Berry lick, you can't play rock guitar. Bob Dylan called Berry "the Shakespeare of rock 'n' roll. Bruce Springsteen tweeted, "Chuck Berry was rock's greatest practitioner, guitarist, and the greatest pure rock 'n' roll writer who ever lived. ....I was born in the 40s and saw all this happening. Jerry Lee Lewis and Chuck Berry were my favorites.. From the 50s to the late 70s, what a time it was !!!

LOL, I've seen many genre performers in concert and one of the best was New Year's Eve in the late 60's with Chuck Berry live! Hit of the night, My Little Ding-a-Ling, nuff said

You can always interpret that song (and so many others) any way you like. On the other hand, when you have a famous rock & roll musician/singer on stage and he's singing about "a-rockin' & a-rollin', " he COULD have meant just that. When "a-reelin" gets added, you might naturally think, "dancin'." On the other hand, with the intro to the person of the opposite gender into the picture (when they said "she" back then, they meant it), you'd have to be pretty much VERY young, or just deaf, dumb, very innocent, or just plain stupid, to not understand the alternate meaning. 😀😅😂😇

Don't worry about knowing all the names of the Bee Gees. I'm absolutely SURE someone will fill them in, in the other comments (grin).

The Bee Gees were the hosts of the midnight special at this time! there are some videos where they sung their own songs or a Beatles medley for example!

I know a bit more about Chuck if anyone cares to read it.. Up to 1958/59, Chuck used a Gibson ES-350T guitar, then mostly a Gibson ES-335.. Chuck Berry wrote songs in keys that weren't 'normal' for a guitar player. This opinion was shared by Keith Richards himself! although some suggest that he chose keys like B-flat and E-flat because horns are set up to those keys.. Or it could be that he sang best In B-flat. Judging from my own experience, the neck is a lot more friendly the further up you go, with shorter fingering..Chuck's vocal range may play a role, but lots of early rock music is played in keys friendly to the feature instruments piano and saxophone. Chuck did not have much of a vocal range, and the "limited sound" created in most of his songs all sounded the same, mostly because of the chord structuring. But mix great showmanship, with a new innovative music style, along with, a not-rushed, pleasing voice, and you have the beginnings of Rock & Roll.. Now for a fact, Chucky boy was a Cheapskate.! He never wanted to have the expense of a dependable and professional touring band. He would drive himself to his concerts, carry his own guitar and amplifier in the trunk, and have the concert promoter hire a local band to back him up. He assumed any bunch of kids would know all of his songs and all of the arrangements. This turned out to be not such a good thing, and Chuck's reputation of putting on erratic and sometimes out-of-tune performances began to become a regular occurrence.! He seldom paid the bands that were supplied as part of Chuck's appearance agreements, and rarely, if ever, thanked them. The way Chuck played two strings on a guitar simultaneously ("Johnny B. Goode" is a classic example and stands as the Holy Grail of rock and roll guitar intros). It was created because Chuck was too cheap to hire a second guitarist for his band to create the sound in his head so he developed the simultaneous two-string guitar sound so that he could play both parts by himself!. In my opinion, , lol, , He also insisted on being paid in cash before he even walked on stage. This was understandable given the suspicion artists had in general that a promoter would stiff them by either not paying them or bouncing a check. He was even known to bring an old paper coffee cup into the 7-11 to see if they would give him a free cup of coffee with a hot dog..A good friend of mine was working the cash register, so I do believe her.. well, I have to stop somewhere, sorry Seaton Hill..I get carried away like old people sometimes do..
