In the first position it’s the shortest distance btw the two cans and when you swap them it turns the distance into the maximum distance they can be apart. It’s easier to understand if you think about the cans like bottom one is a “floor” and the top one is a “roof”. The second measurement you’re lowering the “floor” and raising the “roof” hence why you get a larger measurement. I’m not the best at explaining but essentially all you’re doing is widening the gap between the cans. Just remember, the counter top is irrelevant, and you’ll get it.

W=width of the can.

What he measures is
C+W-H = X
C+H-W = Y
Assume
X = Y
X-Y = 0
(C+W-H) - (C+H-W) = 0
2W - 2H = 0

Makes perfect sense. First you flip the cans towards eachother, next you flip them away. If the bottom can is upwards, and the top can is sideways, they are closer to eachother, if the bottom can is sideways, and the top can is upwards, they are farther…

In measuring 82 cm... The length of the bottom Can is not included but at second time the length of upper can in getting measured that's why it is more than first time.
