This is why I just buy a good frame and build on the rest. Then in the future I only need to buy frames.

Pretty much nailed it on what to spec out. The suggested components was a nice addition as well.

Zack: Big thumb up. Keep on doing these videos, they are just like the fresh morning breeze while riding the youtube jungle.

Q1. Total control and versatility of the bike as I live in a big city. So:

5. Tyres. I go for 700.25C for the tyres with a kevlar band protection. No matter the brand. Big cities are full of

4. Wheels. The front wheel and the rear wheel do not necessarily have to match. You are more likely to want a rear wheel with a more important rim height to transfer the most of your energy and a front wheel with a shorter rim height and a larger rim to absorb the shocks.

3. The geometry. A good size and geometry for your frame is the most important parameter. It has to match the usage you make of the bike. There is no need for an aggressive track bike frame in the city center. Your handlebars are part of the geometry of your bike so consider this parameter while choosing your frame.

2. The ratio. Feel free to get yourself a good crank with bolts so you can change the size of your crank as well as the number of teeth on your sprocket. If you want to keep the same length of chain you can find a couple Crank/Sprocket that match your frame size.

1. The saddle. This can go from one bike to another. Choose it wisely. You can lock it with a chain to the bike frame if it's your precious. If you go for a leather one, it will take you some miles to work the leather to your ass shape and you will need to take care about the leather.

Riding has to be pleasurable so remember to track your pains and sore muscles to upgrade your bike components with the really good advices of Zack!

I think you nailed it. I go for comfort too with speed second. The only other thing I could think of is a rear cog tooth # downgrade once strength is gained, but that is mostly for non-hilly areas.

the top 5 things to upgrade in my opinion.
1. definitely the crankset. if you ride extremely aggressively you're going to either one break the crankset or two you'll hate the creaking a clicking of every pedal stroke
2. tires Cuz good tires=nice ride
3. wheels Those deep rim really terrible wheels are just so bad. after one fall and numerous locking my rear wheel went out of true
4. stem that stem is what keeps the flight deck on your bike if it breaks in you for some reasons you'll have to pray that you don't fall and break your neck
5. handlebars because position really matters for a lot of people. if you want an aggressive position then you'll want to have a track drops or some drops. super i.portatn for me.

You really shouldn't sit on your wallet. It's terrible on your back.

the most important thing for riding is *happiness*. Sometimes riding very fast makes me happy, sometimes riding long distances does it. Sometimes sightseeing at a slow pace does it.

So, the most important thing for me is motivation, which comes mostly in the shape of a Bluetooth speaker fixed to my handlebar so that I can sing while riding!

This video makes me remind article that I have read about a year ago. It was about comparation between spending money on cheap bike and space quality clothing vs expensive bicycle and cheaper clothes. About £300 spend on good clothes gave better results than £1800 price difference on bicycle value. Reason was simple. Not aerodynamic or wight but keeping rider in comfort zone makes difference.

Hi Zack, nice video. I did actually change every single thing you talked about in the last month and my bike is a lot more comfortable. I hope you do a video on bike riding safety and/or how to ride in a group.

the best bang for the buck upgrade for reliability during daily (ab)use is some tire sealant or tubeless juice in your inner tubes. especially if you like supple road bike tires.
that shit is for real! all but the most brutal punctures patch themselves in seconds. (this might be worth it's own vid)

A really important upgrade for fixed gears is a derailleur. It seriously improves the ride and will make you faster and more comfortable. A freehub as an add-on is highly recommended. TAKE THAT HIPSTERS!

Ride quality is a number one for me ..if your in pain riding it's another excuse not to ride .
My top up grades
Seat ... sprung brooks seat is the best ! Little heavy but improves longer ride time .
Tyres ...had cheap tyres, they work ..but better quality tyres are the best . I notice the better cornering in quality tyres.
Chain lube not wd40 or motor oil ... not really a up grade but you do add it to your bike, the difference is the lube tends to stay clean and works well . Motor oil is too heavy and tends to collects dirt .

The most important thing to avoid flats is to keep your tires inflated to the correct pressure. Otherwise, you’ll get flats regardless of how expensive your rubber is.
