Technically, Lee, this was not really a "red-eye" flight. I did this on a weekly or monthly basis for years between ~~ 1980 and 2000.
The red-eye flights from LAX to JFK or Newark leave between 10 p.m. and midnight and arrive in NY after 6 a.m. You were on a late afternoon flight, which leave between 3 and 4:30 p.m. or so, and arrive between 11 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. or so. Every so often, I swore off the red-eye flights for a year or two, but then eventually would run into a situation where I had to take one.
The problem was not being unable to sleep on planes (I do that just fine), but my difficulty in adjusting my body clock after flying eastbound on a red-eye. I had the same problem when flying to London. Unfortunately, there are only two or three or four flights from NY to London that leave in the morning. Otherwise I'm going to arrive between 5 and 8 a.m. and the hotel room is never ready. There are no flights leaving LAX for New York between 4:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. (All times local)
