As a South Sudanese, the two words and the reaction to them sum up how far our basketball team has reached.
On our way up, we emphatically cleared all African powerhouses like Angola, Tunisia, Senegal, and Egypt.
We beat Asian powerhouses like China and the Philippines during the last FIBA world cup.
Yet people are still shocked when we came close to beating the "Supreme Team."

This is the last Olympics where the USA is *mostly* certain to get the gold. Bron, Steph, and KD will be out of their prime or retired by 2028. AD and Embiid's bodies probably won't be able to handle +20 minutes per game in another 4 years.

Can Tatum, Hali, Ant, Bam, and Booker win Gold in Los Angeles if they add players Jaylen, Chet, Paolo, Cade, Ja, Maxey, and Naz (and maybe even Cooper Flagg)? Maybe, but the 2028 Olympics will probably be International Basketball's best chance to make an upset, especially when "small ball" lineups don't really perform well in FIBA rules compared to the NBA. You need big players in the front court, and international players like Giannis and Jokic will still be viable players at age 33. Not to mention Wemby will be hitting his prime by then.

I would love nothing more than the USA losing all three group games going home empty handed to re-think how they see themselves in FIBA basketball. USA has the best talent at U19 level and younger, but then they all become college one-and-done's then NBA superstars and unless they're invited by USAB to play in World Cups and Olympics, they only have to finish 3rd out of four or six teams each time in FIBA America events like qualifying windows with a group of overseas American players and G-League players that respect the level of FIBA competition and don't flip the narrative with bullshit like "international teams have been together since childbirth" when the other countries are built on 4-year cycles tops.
