Australian Vegemite is a distant cousin of this. Both are pretty good savoury flavour boosters.

I remember being in a jungle youth hostel in Queensland when I was first offered Vegemite to try. I put it on a slice of bread, just as I would peanut butter. Everyone at the very long table made a loud sound. The person beside me took the jar and bread and removed all but a very thin layer and gave it back to me. I immediately thought that if you only wanted that much, when you were used to eating it. It must not be very good. I was right. They told me it was an acquired taste. I knew immediately that I would not l wouldn’t like it. Peanut butter doesn’t require you to develop a taste for it. Either you like it or you don’t.

I tried it for the first time a few days ago and, while it is unusual initially, it’s really not so bad. It has a savory flavor that sort of reminds me of roast beef. But it’s also slightly tangy and bitter so a little is better than a lot.
