When I was in high school in the early 90's I had a minor obsession with the Chudnovsky formula for pi having read an article about it in Nature or some such magazine. I tried to get my math teacher or an engineer friend to explain it to me but nobody knew or was interested. I tried to get a copy of their paper and struck out there too (pre-internet). I don't think I ever even got it to work with a calculator, not sure why. But I always thought it amazing that it could (hypothetically) crank out 14 digits of pi with each round of integer math.

You could have made things a bit easier by not adding zeroes at the right hand side of your number, but instead truncating (or better, rounding) the numbers you subtract. Those digits aren't significant anyway, and the result is that the subtractions become shorter and shorter  — and you get a good idea about when the significant digits run out.
