This advice sounds good for someone up north. Let the ice dissipate on its own and hit the next call. Here in Florida give it 30 minutes and there is no ice left. Crazy hot 🥵

Every AC company here says to just leave the fan only running once you call complaining about no cooling. I doubt everyone listens, but it's a good policy to have for this reason alone.

luckily down here in florida we have a lot of heat pump systems. so i usually switch it to heat pump heating, hook a shop vac on the drain line outside and its defrosted in about 5-10 minutes! 9/10 times if its frozen that bad its an airflow issue, usually bad blower

Check the blower motor. I ran into that today on a job and the blower motor was shot. So instead of wasted trip, blower motor is on its way while she's thawing.

I’ve seen my old boss thaw one real quick by disconnecting the condenser fan.
Or if it’s a heat pump you can flip it into heat mode and thaw everything.

So ice can dissipate on its own after shutting off the unit? Also is there any way that ice could cause any problems in the unti or system?

I just did a coil today in Massachusetts when it was 100° outside and about 140° in the attic and I got the system cooling within an hour because I let the coil defrost and then checked the charge once all of the ice was gone. You can’t check charge if there’s any ice on the coil but a 160° attic will defrost that shit really quick within 30 minutes

Normally means low freon but normally it's because the dirty filters or dirty A-frame coils

By the time i call my landlord to bring out an HVAC tech, I've at least defrosted it once and changed the filter, opened all the registers and try again to see if it is an airflow issue. If it freezes a second time, bring out the tech and thaw it before they get there, save them a second trip.

Ususally by the time its freezing up it hasn't been cooking for a long time 😂

Why tomorrow. Your already there unless you cant charge a frozen line. I've heard adding will help in defrosting.

Will this fix the issue for good or is there a leak/freon issue? I ask because Im currently having this same issue.

If It's a heatpump you can do 2 things, try manual defrost or heat mode but prepare for water at indoor unit it'll thaw in something like 2 to 3 hours. Turn it on and charge mostly based on superheat if it's txv both if not. Then take split and wait for system to satisfy if you actually care

I hope you at least made sure the indoor blower was running, system had a clean filter and made sure nothing was blocking the evaporator coil

Also on them gas furnaces, you could take coil door off and run gas heat and that bad boy will be thawed off real quick, of course Make sure drainline isn't clogged bc that thawed ice needs somewhere to go lol
