People need to start understanding the current landscape of men's table tennis:

1) Players are getting stronger and stronger. China is no longer the once dominant nation we once knew. All countries have very advanced techniques and strategies. Its no longer exclusive to China.

2) Ma Long was truly one of kind. His achievement has peaked and reach the ceiling of professional table tennis. No current players are anywhere close to achieving what Ma Long has. And I don't think anyone else can either in the short run. I think people need to start putting less expectation on the future generations that they can replicate what Ma Long has done.

3) Give Wang Chuqin a break. He just had his favorite racket stepped on and couldn't play as well with the spare one. Plus, he didn't lose empty handed, he helped China won the mixed doubles which was the category that China fail to get in Tokyo.

He still has team's event to prove himself. Its not all over yet for Wang Chuqin.

People need to understand that Wang is just 24 and he already worked himself up to earn the Olympics singles slot. How many athletes can say that? Ma Long didn't become a grand slam at 24. He won his first World Championship title at 27 and first Olympics at 28. Chen Meng won her first Olympics at 27 and now being 30, hasn't won the World championship title yet. Liu Shiwen won her world Champion title at 28. If Fan Zhendong were to win the gold in Paris, he would've done it at 27. Sun Yingsha at 24, had her previous Olympics experience, still hasn't win the gold medal. Why are people being so hard on Wang? Most of the fans are not from China anyway and whether China wins or lose the gold doesn't affect you at all. If China loses, at most it satisfies your inner ego as a Ma Long fan. I doubt if Ma Long got selected and lost you would scold him.

Wang Chuqin is definitely a blessing for China. When the country was in search of a successor to Ma Long, Wang Chuqin stepped up. He accomplished what Lin Gaoyuan and Liang Jingkun, despite being older and debuting earlier, couldn’t do. Wang Chuqin showcased a strong display of skills and mental toughness, which set him apart from LGY and LJK, helping him win more titles and achieve the world number one ranking—something others couldn’t manage.

But the Olympics proved once again that, despite Wang Chuqin's talent, he’s still not mentally strong enough for the biggest stages. As mentioned in the video, this isn’t the first time he’s choked under pressure. I also remember a big choke during the Chinese Super League a few years back when Wang Chuqin lost 18 points in a row, causing his team to lose the championship. He was also the first player to lose to a foreigner in the World Team Table Tennis Championships two consecutive times.

Wang Chuqin may be a great player, but without the right mentality, He might just end up like Xu Xin, Wang Liqin, and Liu Shiwen—players who were incredible, won numerous titles, and even became world number one, but probably won't ever reach Grand Slam status.

well presented video. I am a Ma Long fan. I believe to ensure victory, you shouls definitely send out your best players. Ma Long simply couldnt perform consistently enough to be selected. One of the comments said it was a mistake choosing Wcq because he lost. He doesn't account the fact that, Ma Long playing wouldn't have guaranteed a win. If Ma Long had lost in an early round which is also entirely possible, he would have contradicted himself because Ma Long losing was a mistake. Having more 'experience and maturity' is just subjective, and with that argument, shouldn't they select Ma Lin or some previous gold medalist as their player? lol.

Ma Long obliterated Wang 4-0 in their last meeting a couple of months ago.
Moreover, Ma has proven that he rises to the occasion in big matches, ESPECIALLY the Olympics.
We all knew Wang was not ready yet.

Wang Chuqin's lost in the Olympics doesn't make the Chinese administrator's selection any less fair or wrong. Every Chinese player competed under the same system and was informed about the criterias. Ma Long along side the other Chinese Players were given equal amount of tournaments to participate and accumulate points. Including Smashes, Star Contenders and World Championships. Ma Long failed to deliver in any of these tournaments other than the world cup. 


While Wang Chuqin and Fan Zhendong are reaching finals and winning titles in those WTT events and world Championships, Ma Long was constantly losing out in the early stages of every round, including losses to foreigners. That is why he lacked behind in points which resulted in him losing the slot.


Wang Chuqin won the most titles and became world number one. He earned the slot fair and square. Him crashing out is a completely different matter unrelated to fairness. If Ma Long's fans still cannot understand this and keep playing the victim card calling 'justice' for Ma Long, just let them continue to live in their delusions. Like what the video said, fans would only think the selections is fair if Ma Long plays.

Choosing Wang Chuqin and Fan Zhendong for singles was perfectly reasonably. The two of them are the least likely to lose to a foreign player based on available evidence. That does not mean that they are invincible. The game has evolved very rapidly in the last 4-5 years. In the men's game the rest of the world has considerably improved their game. Players like Harimoto, Moregardh, Jang Woojin, Calderano, the Lebrun brothers, Lin Yun-Ju, etc. play at really high levels. While Fan Zhendong and Wang Chuqin are still the best players in the world, the difference between their levels and the top non-Chinese players is small enough for them to get beaten quite frequently. If the current trend continues, we are going to see Chinese male players being beaten by non-Chinese opponents more often. That does not mean they are bad players, or the selection criteria are flawed. Also players' performances vary randomly from day to day. While Wang Chuqin is definitely a better player than Truls Moregardh (in fact he has been the best player in the world over the last two years), on that particular day Truls played at an incredibly high level, while Wang Chuqin was not at his best. In the 2010s, the gulf between China and the rest of the world was so enormous that if a Chinese player underperformed, they would still win comfortably. That is no longer the case. Exciting times ahead!

Its sad to see so many delusional Ma Long fans still failed to understand why their idol lost the slot to the two current selected players even though you have made multiple videos explaining the criterias. Ma Long was not robbed and never was. His performance was inferior compared to WCQ and FZD and it does not matter if you deliver when it matters or not because you still have to earn that slot following the rules set by the coaches. If you truly believe that you have chance to win the Gold for the third time, they you should have played your heart out even in the normal tournament to earn the Olympic slot. Other players like WCQ and FZD wants to win gold too. What makes you think that ML should be given an automatic free slot? WCQ lost in the Olympics, yes. But he won the slot fair and square. Ma Long fans can only continuously hate WCQ because thats the only way to make themselves feel better about Ma Long's absence.

What's really unfair if the ridiculous two players per country rule. Until 2012, it was 3, but even that was ridiculous and resulted in absurdities like Wang Liqin not playing in 2000, despite being a dominant world number one. All of the top ten should automatically qualify, irrespective of nationality. After that, you can apply limits. It's a travesty that players like Xu Xin, Liang Jingkun and Lin Gaoyuan will never get to play the Olympics singles, while shit players from less successful countries can be five time Olympians. As it stands, the Olympics is a Mickey Mouse tournament in terms of player quality. The prestige is high, but objectively, any decent WTT event is harder to win and has a better field.

China team has no choice but to let Wang Chuqin play Olympics single because of Ma Long's strength ebbing and injuries. If Ma Long were able-bodied, China team would let him play both single and team. If so, the best arrangement for Wang is to play MD and team for that high fault tolerance and next Olympics to play single and team
