This pilot does a better job of presenting the news than most journalists.

It is a horrible tragedy. Mom, dad and 3 kids lost their lives on their first day in NYC. My heart goes out to their extended families. Same for the pilot Sean’s family. RIP

Happened to me once as a passenger in a Blackhawk, but it’s a much more robust machine and we kept the main rotor with all surviving. This one was a VN-era Bell 206. The transmission above the cabin locks up from a failed bearing or lack of lube, snapping the shaft and allowing the main rotor to go eccentric and hit the tail boom. The impact caused the main rotor to separate, and the cabin falls like a rock without the main rotor acting as a parachute. Speculation, but based on a real incident.

I was a helicopter pilot with almost 9, 000 hours in Sikorsky and Bell models.

I retired 10 years ago and said that I would never ride in a helicopter again.

I have lost almost 2 dozen friends to helicopter accidents and so many more injured.

Best decision ever!

Condolences to all.

I think people forget that crashing into water from that height in a free fall is like hitting a concrete wall.

I cannot imagine how terrifying for the Pilot and the passengers on board. Seeing that helicopter upside down in a freefall makes me sick to my stomach.😢

Mechanics have a saying...anything mechanical can fail at any time for any reason. There's no such thing as 100% reliability. That's why we have mandatory preventive maintenance & inspection intervals.

So utterly sad. I've never seen John DelGiorno before because I'm not from NYC, but he seems an excellent ambassador for pilots and local news. So well-spoken and able to convey both information as well as emotion about this tragedy.

This is unbelievably heartbreaking. I never knew Agustin, but I have worked with several people who did. He was a leader and incredible force within the big iron software and rail industries. He will be sorely missed. May God bless and keep him and his family. To those he left behind, may the peace of the Lord be with you. We will honor Agustin by carrying on his work and legacy of working tirelessly to improve the lives of all those he served.

Other video shows the MRGB, mast, and main rotor are still together and still "flying" but no longer attached to the fuselage. Terrible catastrophic failure.

My high school friend went down in the hudson in 1986 while traffic reporting. It was the second crash she was in. The first she was able to swim to safety. The second, I believe her seat belt jammed. It was due to a maintenance failure.
