Greece's answer to Italian Lasagna..... except this is WAY lower carb!

Layers of soft eggplant, a rich meat sauce topped with a thick layer of bechamel sauce. Worth every pot and pan .... 😂

I made this dish and it tasted great 👍. I made it again also I'm a cast iron skillet 🍳 and fried the ground beef first with chili powder and wine. Then a layer of cheddar and mozzarella. I put a layer of sautéed spinach, drained and pressed out the water. The top layer was the bechamel recipe that is absolutely delicious.
I think the cast iron skillet is excellent and easy to prepare the dish in. I also make a frittata in the iron skillet.

Interesting, everyone seems to have a different version of this. This one is probably closest to the one I've done before, minus the breadcrumbs on top. Most recipes seem to call for a layer of potatoes on the bottom, fried usually, but this would be healthier. (of course with a bechamel sauce, healthy is relative). I've also seen one with courgette/zucchini and red onion in the bottom layer along with potato and aubergine. That one didn't have a top layer of it. Also 2 mixed some of the bechamel into the mince to thicken it and make for easier slicing. I'm cooking this tomorrow and I've less idea how to do it now after a night of looking at videos than I did when I started.

Moussaka should also have a layer of potato, that’s the correct recipe

You forgot the potatoes. Moussaka is comprised of eggplant layer and a potatoe layer too.

Greece's answer to Italian Lasagna is Pastitsio, not Moussaka. Moussaka is close to Melanzane Parmiggiano.

Great recipe but don't add any salt whatsoever. Perhaps don't salt the eggplant as the modern growers have created a variety that doesn't require 'salting'.
