Het Nederlandse televisieprogramma "Countdown" was van 1976 t/m 1993 “Europe’s Number 1 Rock Show” en werd uitgezonden bij Veronica. Later werd het programma ook uitgezonden in het buitenland en was het op z'n hoogtepunt in meer dan 20 landen op televisie te zien.

Gedurende deze 17 jaar muziekgeschiedenis zijn er opnames gemaakt met talloze internationale sterren, zoals Paul McCartney, David Bowie, Tina Turner, Janet Jackson, Stevie Wonder, The Rolling Stones, George Harrison, U2, The Police, Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen, Lenny Kravitz, Depeche Mode, New Order, Whitney Houston, Duran Duran, R.E.M., Frankie Goes To Hollywood, The Cure, Run DMC, Cyndi Lauper, Iron Maiden, New Kids On The Block, LL Cool J.

Uiteraard kwamen Nederlandse top-acts als Doe Maar, Andre Hazes, Herman Brood, Frank Boeijen, Spargo, Golden Earring, Time Bandits, De Dijk, De Raggende Manne, Hans de Booij, Gerard Joling, Drukwerk ook langs voor een optreden in Bussum.

Countdown werd gepresenteerd door oa Lex Harding, Erik de Zwart, Adam Curry, Simone Walraven Wessel van Diepen, Jeroen van Inkel, Rob Stenders, Simone Angel en Jasper Faber.

I am now 44 years old and hearing this song for the first time in a very long time brought back some very strong memories and feelings as it reminded me of my youth. It's funny how music can make you feel in certain ways. Wonderful song. RIP Greedy Smith.

What saddens me to distraction about Greedy is that anyone who heard Chisel sing, "Getting the Band Back Together" and how they transplanted that 80's flair into a new song, would surely agree the Mentals could have done the same. I think Greedy would have loved to have recreated the old flair with the other fellows. Their tunes were great for celebrations and Greedy was a loss and a half because the Mentals exceeded "one hit wonder" status.

Een Top 40 hit wordt "Live It Up" in 1986 niet, maar dit door de film "Crocodile Dundee" bekend geworden nummer zorgt wel voor wereldwijd succes voor deze Australische band uit Sydney. En dan te bedenken dat zanger en toetsenist Greedy Smith er eigenlijk helemaal geen hit in ziet. Ook al worden er geen hits meer gescoord, de band bestaat heden ten dage nog steeds, zij het in een gewijzigde samenstelling en sinds 2019 zonder Greedy Smith die in dat jaar overlijdt aan een hartaanval. Smith was het laatst overgebleven lid uit de succesjaren.
