DIY Soil Test! Knowing What Soil You Have is Essential for Gardening Success!

Having the right soil is imperative for your plants to grow well so it makes sense that you would want to know what type of soil you have in the garden. This test makes it really simple to understand your soil composition and allow you to make the necessary adjustments to provide what plants need to thrive. Once you’ve done this test, you’ll be able to determine the ratios of sand, silt and clay in your soil. Simply measure the total depth and then take the ratio of each component to determine the percentage composition. For example, my total soil depth was 2 inches. my sand was 1 inch deep, making up 50%. My clay was about 1/8th of an inch deep, making up about 6% which leaves 42% left for silt. Now I know that my soil is heavy and sand and silt. This means it would be best for me to add some clay which will significantly help in moisture and nutrient retention. Knowing what you have and then what you need is the most important step in having a successful garden.

I could probably make pottery from the native soil in my yard.

Man youre basically doing a soil gradation by hydrometer, without the hydrometer. That's awesome, never thought about this in my garden despite running a soil lab

Some plants prefer more of one than another. Bamboo, for instance, prefers more sand, though it can survive in clay-rich soil, so long as the roots aren't left standing in water.

My garden died last year I bought some really good top soil from a company and it made a whole world of difference. I just use a little and water it's changed my plant's. They are so healthy now. They are in the same soil but with the little bit top soil they are thriving.

Most state agricultural departments offer free soil testing which will tell you the soil type, pH, humic matter, and nutrient composition.

This be great if i didnt have straight sand. 😂 tomatoes, berries, and peppers are fast growers for that. Weve been fixing and adding soil for a few years now as its expensive as we have alot of land and doing places a section at a time. Got halted when we needed a new septic tank and the yard became a back burner project to recoup from that massive hit. 😢 We are getting there i joked and told my husband the yard is on a 5 year plan. Prep and clean up alone is gunna be a few years. Bought this house from an older couple and has neglected yard wise so weve done alot in the time weve been here. Thanks fpr tips have a great day!!

A ribbon test is a handy little quick measure. Jar test is better though.
