PDAF is a massive development for the Panasonic LUMIX brand. But don’t expect miracles upon release. It has taken Sony, Canon and Nikon years to refine and perfect their DPAF and hybrid AF technologies.

Fingers crossed for G9 mark II with pdaf! (and maybe 24 or 32 megapixels, better dynamic range and low light performance...)

Yes! Great news! A new S5 with phase detect and no recording limit will be a game changer. If it has similar low light capabilities to the Leica SL2-S, I'm getting one!

I looked at Panasonic when I was about to upgrade to a full frame. It was right after they can out with their full frame bodies. The two things that held me back from Panasonic was the limited number of lenses and price and the fact that they didn't have phase detect. It's good to see them finally catching up with auto focus.

Seriously caught me at the point of deciding to keep Lumix or buy into another system. This is great news. I’ll definitely stay if pdaf is in. Thanks for the news.

If the S5 II gets the PDAF too I know which is my new camera...
Thanks for covering it (and the previous video!)

I think the key point is that it is implemented together with the GH6 sensor tech- that makes it much more likely to land in Lumix cameras. Looking forward to a G9 mk2 with that AF

They did Finally, this is huge. Panasonic will murder it for video even more now. That always held them back.

For those who don't already know - every Thursday at 2PM Eastern/1PM Central/11AM Pacific - Lumix USA on YT has a weekly live broadcast for all things Panasonic. They never give out any "leaks", but it might be a good place to start if this news is making those of us in Panny world really happy.

I'm waiting either for Panasonic to catch up with their autofocus or Sony to enable open gate 4x3 video shooting. I want to invest in anamorphic and to get the best of the anamorphic world I need a larger squeeze, and if I'm shooting 16x9 I end up having to crop A LOT from the sides and losing a lot of resolution. So open gate is practically a must. Even though the anamorphic lenses are manual only, I would still need the autofocus for the regular spherical lenses.
At this point I still think that the best case scenario would be Sony enabling open gate recording, because their autofocus is already great!

If Panasonic uses a hybrid autofocus, both PDAF and contrast detect, I think their autofocus should be really good. Because their dept from defocus, or at least I think that’s what it’s called? Is pretty solid. So can’t wait to see what they do.

Man an S5 style camera with a reliable Phase AF would make me jump honestly

it's nice to see Panasonic finally stepping it up, I've always liked their products. But, its way too late... unfortunately

They gambled on the timing of their relaese and waited until everybody dropped their cameras so if they drop in February it should be some 🔥🔥 features, PDAF or not.

Hi Simon, what a unique niche have they found: with this PTZ camera you can track the birds of prey who are threatening your chicken!! Sounds indeed more productive and higher prio compared to just shooting stills from such birds with a Lumix S camera 😛

I am so happy to hear. I hope this is implemented in the new s5.

It's a news which is so good to be true. If Panasonic do this, I'll definitly buy one.

I just put my Sony FX30 purchase on temporary hold. If the rumored S5H (if that was even a thing) has PDAF and it's about the same price, and all the current L mount lenses work with this PDAF, I will most likely go with said S5H because of the better dynamic range (I expect since it's full frame) and the fact that I like panasonic better in general.

I'm speechless as well.
Panasonic can make announcements of camera's they are going to release in 3 months!
Nikon cannot make any announcements, and any rumours only come out the day before the camera is released.

YES!... FINALLY! Thank you for the news. I'm putting Panasonic on notice today. I'm a big Panasonic fan, but I will only buy another Panasonic camera once we get a more reliable AF system like PDAF.
