It's so frustrating when people tell us or others to "sit still" or "stop fidgeting", etc

My legs go and shake and I’m not aware of it. Also play with my fingers when I am stressed. My children’s stimming is more violent then mine so I know stimming helps our brains get into a calm state for us

Stimming keot me from melting down the other day when my friend's and my plans were absolutely ruined. 😂 I can laugh about it now but at the time, holy moley. We were both overtied, overstimulated, and over the day, and just wanted to go home. Stimming kept me at bay until I finally got home and then...I didnt even meltdown then. By the time I finally got home, I was calm and regulated. It was fantastic.

I have ADHD, not ASD. I've endeavored to learn a lot about ASD since being in a serious relationship for the past year with my guy who is autistic (Mucho learning from Orion! Thank you!) As a bonus, because there are so many common traits between ASD and ADHD, I've learned a lot more about my ADHD traits (Thought I knew it all! Ha, right). Stimming is a perfect example. I never knew all the little repetitive behaviors I've done all my life are stimming- shaking my knee up and down while sitting, clicking my fingernails with my thumbnail repeatedly, inadvertently doing rhythmic "dance" movements when there's no music. Etc, etc, etc. I do stimming stuff almost all the time, but it's usually pretty subtle unless I'm anxious. Then it ramps up big time. It's so fascinating to me how you lay out ASD and ADHD on a venn diagram with polar opposite traits on the outsides and very similar or exactly the same traits in the intersection.

My big stims are hair twirling and when I'm in a good mood or my cannabis pain management kicks in - I sing... I remember singing when I was a child - my mother would yell at me and I've even been slapped, so I've been masking for the better part of my 40 years of life.

My pedantic ass needs to tell you that this short didn't say what the title says, just that stimming is important and intrinsic to Autism. It's my pet-peeve to watch a short that doesn't say what it does but mostly cuz I was gonna send it to someone but it's not actually relevant.

I can never tell if I’m actually autistic or not because I have CPTSD and have been traumatized ongoing since 2-3 years old. I relate so much to autistic people it’s not even funny. Many things that relates to autistic people I’ve also done since a child (not understanding jokes, sarcasm, taking everything literally, being “slow” not understanding directions people give me unless it’s incredibly specific or written down, have had a fascination for patterns and counting objects I see in the room, and a was always just deemed as the shy kid and extremely sensitive and emotional or a “crybaby”, lack of eye contact and seeming disrespectful to others apparently, masking my true self and “weird” behaviors due to it not being socially acceptable and tryna fit in with others but never truly being able to and always bullied and didn’t understand why) I can’t currently go for a formal diagnosis either because I don’t have health insurance yet. But I just don’t know which it is because the symptoms for autism and CPTSD are dangerously similar. I obsess and watch countless videos about autism. Does anyone else relate and/or have good advice? Also, I am aware that many autistic people also have CPTSD.

I have communicative stims, sensory regulatory stims, emotionally expressive/regulatory stims, focus enhancing stims... And that's just what I have noticed since I started paying attention. There could be more purposes behind them.

It sounds like it helps regulate the nervous system & emotions

I also am assuming that a lot of stimming may be diagnosed as OCD when you can have both

Once we treated our chronic yeast infections the “stimming” went away on its own. No one understands😢. “Autism” as defined by big actually encompasses a pleathora of different illnesses. The most common in my area is actually a true & treatable infectious condition. We need to break down each type of “autism” so
that people get proper treatment. A good example is: a head injury, brain tumor, stroke, bullet to the head, etc. can all cause identical or hard to differentiate symptoms. You’d better figure out the root cause or the patient will suffer. The same is true w/ autism which needs to be properly defined.

I stim myself, yet sadly, get frightened by a child I know who stims wildly and loudly (in ways that are actually dangerous).

I think I have finally come to realize that my compulsive talking, while borne of ADHD, is a stimming behavior. This is probably connected to the fact that I can sit quite still when I am overwhelmed, which can be freeze or sometimes depressive psychomotor retardation...possibly the same thing in different degrees?

One hard part about talking compulsively, is that it can help me regulate, sometimes raising my dopamine I’d say, but if I do too much it can also overstimulate and gradually dysregulate me.

I have a few questions I’ll put forward, to see what people think. One, is movement related stimming, especially the overt things that people unfortunately notice, typically the best form of stimming, and subtler or internalized stimming typically a less useful option that arises out of masking...or does the subtler or internalized stuff work better for some people based on their profile? Secondly, with any type of stim, do people need strategies to stimulate enough but not overstimulate, or is overstimulation a sign of a less workable stim? And in line with that, how does stimming and compulsive behavior interact? It seems to me that most of my stims have a compulsive component. Is this wholly borne of attempts to suppress them (I think my ticlike bursts are, from suppressing until I no longer can), or can a stim develop into compulsive behavior through, I don’t know, overreliance on one type, or poor “technique?”

If people have thoughts I would very much appreciate hearing them. I’m very late diagnosed and really need to work this out.

Honestly if I were forced to not stim anymore, I would have a complete mental breakdown in less than 48 hours

It is absolutely VITAL for my husband to be able to regulate his emotions. What harm is this doing anyone else, for goodness sakes? Leave people to stim themselves and be understanding of it.
