Linear phrasing involves the articulation and orchestration of each note of a rhythm, groove or fill with a different limb or on a separate voice of the drum kit. This is in contrast with the ‘layered’ approach we normally take when playing beats, where the bass drum/hi-hat or snare drum/hihat fall in unison.
A useful analogy would be to compare a linear phrase to an arpeggio, which is played one note at a time, rather than a chord where notes are played in a

cluster.
In this lesson, we will focus on a single four-note sticking pattern – R L L F. Keep in mind that this concept could be applied to a multitude of sticking patterns.
