A time signature is the numerical fraction that appears at the start of every piece of music and gives us a metric framework within which to perform. It

tells us how to count the music we are playing. It tells us nothing about tempo, volume, style or even what to play. The top number tells us the number of beats per bar, and the bottom number tells us the rhythmic value of those beats. Thus, 3/4 equals ‘three quarter-notes per bar’. Put simply, this tells us to count to three....
