Bill Scientific - The Greenhouse Effect - 1 of 3

Science with a twist of comedy and a dash of Bill!

This video explores earth's Greenhouse Effect and how you can measure it with a simple infrared thermometer. Of course, Bill gets himself into a little (OK, a lot of) trouble along the way!

Target Audience: High school, college introductory courses, and adult (though younger students would enjoy the comedy).

Prerequisite: This video assumes that students are already familiar with the 3 modes of energy transfer--conduction, convection, and radiation.

A personal note: This is my first video production. As such the learning curve was quite steep from both a technical and performance standpoint. It was produced on amateur equipment (using only one camera) and software without funding. Despite minor software/equipment deficiencies and glitches, the final product satisfactorily conveys the design and intent of the program. I look forward to building on this experience in the next production.

This definition is wrong: 1:58 _"This ability of the atmosphere to retain and redistribute heat is called the greenhouse effect."_ (Also, the "two percent" figure at the very end is wrong.)

That's not what the so-called greenhouse effect is. The greenhouse effect is the warming which occurs because "greenhouse gases" like CO2, H2O vapor, etc. are transparent to most incoming sunlight, but absorb much of the outgoing longwave infrared. So they let energy in (from the Sun), but prevent (some of) the energy from getting back out.
