Surface Pro 7 and Surface Pro X for music production - first thoughts!

Will the Surface Pro 7 or Surface Pro X be any good for music production? We won't know until we can test it out! Here's my first thoughts on these two new Surface machines and what the plan is for testing them out.

And sorry, I misspoke, the SP6 i5 has a Quad Core processor.

i was a mac user since the ibook G4 era and my last mac was a macbook pro i7 16gb ram 2015 and for music production i didnt had any complain, everything worked like it should. I switch recently to surface pro 7 mainly because of the touch input and portability and im also very happy with it. I use Ableton Live 10 with a push 2 and Omnisphere v2 as a plugin, no complains! I recoomend using a decent external soundcard but for tiem to time a use the built in soundcard with ASIO4ALL drivers and it also works pretty well, so if you´re planning on buying a SP Pro for music production you should be ok. I don´t use many samples on my mixs but a use a lot of midi with standard Ableton vsts and Omnisphere. Great machine and incredible portability!

Of course you do know that USB-C also transports audio and video? Thus, the lack of both display adapter and headphone jack does not mean you have to rely on wireless solutions such as Miracast or Surface Buds.

The Surface Pro X's 3GHz ARM is clocked faster than the Raspberry Pi's 1.5GHz ARM, and the Raspberry Pi runs proper operating systems like Linux and Windows 10 IoT, so fingers crossed for the Surface Pro X! Looking forward to your thoughtful reviews, as always.

Around 7:15 mark, you mentioned that the SP6 only has a dual core that's true for the i3/m3, but the Surface pro 6 i5 has the Intel Core i5-8250U, and it is a quad-core cpu.

I can’t stand them removing the headphone port. What is the matter with companies these days. So much technology is annoying! iMacs don’t have enough USB ports on see people with dongles when bringing in their MacBooks. Tablets with no stylus holder so you loose a 100 pound pen. Phones come out with no microsd ports...no removable batteries. Keyboard controllers with no mod or pitch wheels. Sorry to sound like Victor Meldrew but them getting rid of the headphone port is another annoying and crap design decision! There....I feel much better getting that off my

Any USB-C docking station can probably display pretty well without using any network video work-around. (exmaple: Dell D6000) But Microsoft does have a MS Surface Dock with video as well.

After 25 years on Apple, I've decided to pre-order the Surface Pro X. Not sure if'll come to regret that decision or not, but I found it encouraging there is a music channel dedicated to it. Subscribed.

Do you still have teh surface pro X arround? Now there's x86 emulation in WIndows 11 so probably you should be able to "magically" run 64 bit software in it!

Hello! Are you aware of any DAWs that will run on Surface pro X - Windows 10 (ARM I think)

BT is not suited for use in DAWs, I've tried.
as for audio drivers, probably only WASAPI would be available. midi controllers are recognized even on SurfaceRT, so shouldn't be a problem unless we're talking about something specialized.

I am struggling what to choose, i7 surface pro 6 or for the same price the i5 Pro 7? I will use it mainly for Bitwig with some VSt’s as a mobile creative Workstation...what do you suggest?

And could you add to.uour test bench some of Arturia virtual instrument, like - just to name one - the modular Moog 55 !? I presently run them on a Lenovo win64 desktop with a 27" touch screen and like to use a Surface on the move (or else, it will be a ThinkPad!)

PS: Funny to me how you're the only guy doing these reviews yet you're far from the person who would most benefit from these devices. These are mobile devices, yet you're in a studio with your interface and all... You don't even appreciate the headphone jack! A must for music making devices like the Surface.
