Free Go Kart Clutch Performance Mods | Centrifugal Clutch Upgrade

Today were taking a look as some Free Go Kart Clutch Mods that can add some serious performance to your predator powered Go Kart, Mini Bike or other project. These mods will work with almost any centrifugal clutch system and are pretty easy to perform yourself for free. These upgrades can turn a standard centrifugal clutch into a high performance max torque ss clutch or similar without the cost.

In this tutorial, we turn a six shoe clutch into a nine shoe clutch and we add a max torque black spring cut to custom length. This will engage the go kart clutch at a higher RPM (3200-3400RPM) and provide more power and better grip.

HOW TO WIN THE FREE CLUTCH-
1. Make sure you are subscribed to DirtGearTv
2. Leave a comment below with the project you intend to use the clutch on. For example "MiniBike"
3. When our next video drops I will randomly select ONE winning comment and ship you the clutch for free

Also, make sure to follow DirtGearTv on Instagram so I have a way to reach the clutch winner!

Black electrical tape wrapped around the outside circumference of the shoes will hold them together so you can install the spring, and reassemble the clutch. Once assembled, simply remove the tape. No more popping shoes.

A trick on re-assembly I did was to put a large hose clamp (or double clamps strung together) around the shoes before putting the thin plate and snap ring on. It retains the shoes nicely. One benefit of these clutches is unlike the maxtorque- these can get locked onto the shaft tightly by the drive shaft end bolt. The xtra tension helps keep the key intact. Mike

Great video! I needed the help improving a C clutch. Was going to put a torque convertor on it but my parts supplier said that the clutch was better for my application. I am building a 212 drag mini bike/show bike. Thanks for the video.

Watch max torques assembly video. It takes the "if you are good enuff / fast enuff" out of the equation and you will go at the whole thing alone more confident. This is a great video. Not trying to knock this guy cause it's obvious he is honestly being helpful.

Also it is really beneficial to lap the brass into the center tube. This will greatly reduce friction and make things a ton more smooth.

Max-torq has a similar video on how to modify a standard centrifugal clutch for racing. He cuts all of the shoes in half, and takes 2 loops out of the spring and says to only do the modifications on a new clutch, never a used one.

As a side note, I'm building an old kart for my niece, the first one I took over for her and her brother is too long for her to reach the pedals, a centrifugal clutch is the last item I need to surprise her with a new kart, and I'm on a stay home dad budget, my kids kart is already finished.

This is the best clutch video there is. Cutting the spring fixed my new clutch. Ty 😊

That's pretty impressive I've never seen anybody put a clutch back together like that and make it look so easy. It's easy for me, but I have a trick. I could never put the clutch back together the way you did it with out some serious aggravation . I put the shoes and the springs together facing down on top of the plate you had on top. And then I mash the other plate with the fins on it into the piece holding the shoes. Then I grab a couple of small C clamps and clamp it togethe, before I put the lock ring on. Otherwise they blow up in my face as I'm trying to put the lock ring back on.

What works the best is to make that piece of crap spring perfectly round. Goes together so easily, you even start enjoying swaping the clutch shoes or spring itself. It also catches at much lower rpm because the spring is not dragging

Predator engine in a go cart for my son been having it for a few years it has a 13 and a half predator engine but no drive train did have a 30 series tourque converter but not big enough for that amount of tourque so it just went threw belts so did away with it it calls for a 40 series but haven't been able to come up with extra funds to acquire it but this project is extremely important to me cause it was something me and my brother was working on to get going for my son and my brother here recently pass away so I wanna finish it for him basically cause it was something we was working on together

Pro tip: use a hose clamp to keep shoes in place if you’re having trouble getting the spring in place😘

Maybe you can help me out: Just purchased a go kart with a 212 predator 6.5 hp engine. It has a centrifugal like the one shown on kart in this video (i believe it has 10 teeth). When we first ran it, it ran like crap. But once I cleaned out the gas tank and replaced the fuel filter, tore apart and cleaned the carburetor (removed the jet ran thin wire and carb cleaner through all the ports) put it back together, and finally replaced the plug with a recommended High performance non resistor AR3910x Autolite plug, it ran amazing with top speeds of 35 MPH. I'll be honest, I don't know much about live axels, centrifugal clutches, sprockets, or torque convertors. The live axel has a 60 tooth sprocket Question: Is there anyway that I can gain more take off power, especially like in grassy areas?? It will take off pretty decent on pavement, but once it's in the grass or making turns, It takes awhile to get going. I know the centrifugal clutch on it is wobbly ( like really wobbly) rusty and loose... maybe it's not engaging or slipping during take off??? So would replacing the clutch help with more bite/grip when during take off?
