So helpful. I discovered macrocytic anemia on a routine blood test and everything pointed to B12 deficiency, so I now take regular injections (as Pernicious anemia is in my family and suspected) and bought the expensive methylated folate as a co-factor, fast forward 6 months and after an initial pick up in symptoms like peripheral neuropathy, everything starts to come back, I know I ran out of folate 2 months back so that was my first mistake, but I thought, hey i'm eating liver and green leafy veggies, it's ok. I was about to order some more 5-methylfolate but on seeing this I just popped to my local chemist and bought folic acid, I've been having extreme weakness in my arms and hands for over 3 weeks now, after taking high strength FA (5mg) for 2 days it's down by about 60%. I think I am someone that utilised FA far better than the methylated version. TY for this info

Request for future content: Seeing as how Vit K is a major part of your work, and how you've mentioned it as successfully treating or preventing tooth decay, it would be awesome to hear your detailed approach to tooth decay in either a podcast or even just a comprehensive Lite video.

What about folinic acid Dr.Chris? Is this form able to do the same thing as syntetic folic acid without the side effect of a build up of the unusable form? Thanks in advance

Hi Chris, I use Megafood Multi which provides folate as "MTHF in broccoli." How does that fit into your discussion?
(By the way, thank you for all the great information!)

I see papers that say food folate (i.e. a 5-MTHF salt, for the purposes of my question) has the same bioavailability (i.e. absorption, for the purposes of my question) as folic acid. Is this true? Does this contradict the end of this video when you say that folic acid doesnt require the same digestive processes as food folate? Or were you using the term "food folate"/"folate in food" to mean something other than 5-MTHF from a supplement? Thanks. I ask because I noticed a difference between a 5-MTHF supp vs. folic acid supp, although it could just have been that the former supp had half the 5-MTHF...

I took 400mcg Folic acid before getting pregnant yet my baby got spina bifida. Then I got to know about MTHFR mutation. But in my country it's not available. Should i take Methyl Folate or Folic Acid? Or both together will be good? Plz answer and help !!! @chris

fom what i read on folic acid , human capacity to utilize folic acid is 200mcg a day, so probably that should be upper limit to avoid bad side effects?

So another question is: what foods naturally contain the unmethylated form of folate?

I don't eat fortified or enriched flours and take a multi that has 400mcg synthetic folic acid. Will this raise my risk of getting cancer?

In the book dirty genes the author says to avoid folic acid?!???!! Any thoughts?

Chris my MCH is chronically low, every time I do bloodwork (about every three months). My MCV is "normal" but bottom of the range. Would a low level of MCH correlate to this issue as well?

if folic acid is totally unnatural then why we have enzyme that converts it to folate?

But I keep hearing that folic acid is carcinogenic.  I do have pernicious anemia, it runs in my family, so I give myself b12 shots.  I've been purposely buying more expensive b complex vitamins that don't contain folic acid!
