I think talent has a small part in all this, I think hard work determination and consistency is the key to improvement, everyone and his abilities, his time and the sacrifice he is willing to give for the music and guitar playing, I can attest to myself that many years I gave up my guitar and my way, I did not have a proper way to learn and did not feel like I was really making progress, but still after a few years I went back to it and I have a huge passion for guitar and music, and also I have a great teacher 😉, And I think a good guitar teacher is very important, a teacher who takes you beyond the basics and instills in you motivation .. So today I understand that improvement takes time, investment, hard work, and I think consistency is the name of the game ... a lot of practice and practice whenever possible ...

Well said, to get better faster you do need to explore your instrument and figure it out . The best instructor can you lead you in the right direction but you have to walk the path yourself

You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink....

I’m a Berklee Grad... ( Boston)... I went when it was a no shit place... It was serious... Anyway... Some people learn faster, because they’re “ Naturals” ... just born to play ( Perfect Pitch) . Some great players just had to work hard.

I don’t know what the dropout rate is at Berklee now, but it was over 90% when I went. Some did leave for Gigs ( Al Di Meola) and others.

I’m a player that had to work hard to get there. I used to play/ practice over 10 hours everyday. I wanted to learn everything that I could. I couldn’t stop !!! My roommate at Berklee ( keyboardist) was playing as well as Keith Emerson when he got to Berklee. Of course I was envious, but if you want to be a great player, you’ve got to “ Work “

These days Berklee sickens me!
When I went, it was only about music... Period!!!!
It’s became a Woke Social Justice bull shit school. There’s no place for politics at a music school. Every Alumni news letter that I receive is all about what color, type of sex you’re into or which minority group someone is in!!!! When I went it was only about music. If you could play was the main qualification of us playing together.

People if you’re thinking about going to Berklee these days.., Don’t ....

Thank you so much for sharing. This is really helpful not only for learning to play the guitar bu for learning just about anything in life. Also, love the pictures of the student back in the day, discovering the passion for musi -- they really help to demonstrate and show the point you are making in a beautiful way. Keep creating more great content

Talent is important in its own way. When talent is combined with hard work and determination it helps you to cover long distances in a shorter time. That can discourage most of the beginners and some intermediate musicians; so you have to advice them that this is not a competition. They have to learn to find enjoyment and satisfaction in every sound they make and stop worrying about the others; it is the voyage that counts...

I would wish for a teacher to handheld me during the lesson time, in such a way that even if it's one note that I learn during the duration of the lesson. It is learned and explored together. (Keeping in view Rocky Balboa and Mickey, for example).
That way that one note would be enough to provide the necessary engagement until the next lesson. Both the teacher and I would learn supportively instead of pushing for multiple things and then leaving it to the student to explore and be ready for the next time. (Although both of these methods are fine, it's just that I would prefer the first one for now).

Thank you Daniel for allowing a space for this conversation to happen. 👍

As I use to say to my students: "You need to add just that little pinch of obsession". Thanks for the video! subscribed!

Why some people learn faster? An acquaintance of mine is a prominent jazz guitarist, who shall remain nameless. I've know him since high school (he already played with the local jazz stars at 14). Once I asked him how much he practices. He said that not much lately, barely 4-6 hours a day. I was a bit surprised, because that's what I thought was practicing a lot. So I asked how much he practiced when he was a teenager. He said 10 hours on weekdays and 14 hours on the weekends.
So I guess that's an answer to why he improved so much faster than I did.

Scientists and Researchers have already found out the secret to success: Wealth.

Wealth gives hard working children advantages and opportunities that impoverished children do not have.

Alternatively, poverty can be such a deterring factor that it actually holds people back.

The harsh truth is that talented hard working people who have wealthy supportive parents have so many advantages that cannot be overcome by equally talented and hard working people from impecunious households.

Huh well be well but, who paid for your Musical instructions. Last time I checked if you really want to learn you have to pay no ands if or buts about it. And it's not Cheap. Those ones that start young have parents that are musicians Even Eddie Van Halen his father had him playing on Different Cruise Liners as the Ship band as a little boy per his recollection on an interview
