I love it whenever Ben cites this statistic. It really provides motivation for me, a low income high schooler, to achieve these simple three things so I don't get stuck in this mess anymore.

This and combined with Dave Ramsay's 7 Baby Steps are perfect.

I dropped out in the 9th grade, didn’t have kids and never got married..it took a minute to find my gift..also left home at 16 and lived in a storage closet for a year in DC..after job corip..I was busting dishes for min wage when on my way home I talked to a vendor sellIng ice cream and sodas..interested I decided to give it a try, after a couple breaks and changing companies I starting averaging 500 weekly and in the 70s great money..after a couple years I couldn’t take this city anymore and finally went home to Houston where my parents finally moved to( from po dunk pa).it took me to be 31 before I got another break to make really good money...it can be done you’ll have it harder but you must persevere...95% chance you’ll make it...btw, I kept learning and to this day I still learn something new every day about different subjects...much easier with the internet now😀

Commenting on this video after listening to the podcast, If Books Could Kill:
If Republicans really believed in this bullshit, then why don’t they ever pass policy on it? If graduating from high school is so important, then why don’t they help make it easier for kids? Ensuring every child got a free breakfast and lunch would help raise test scores. Increasing buses and transportation to schools would increase attendance. Paying teachers more money would increase the quality and consistency in education. Increasing/providing better sex education would decrease teen pregnancies. All of these policies would help drive the success rates of his first two points. But every time democrats try to pass such policies, republicans scream “socialism” and block them. Republicans don’t care about people actually achieving “success” they only care about having a culture war to enrage their base and distract from the massive tax cuts they are giving billionaires/corporations. If Ben actually thought these would help Americans, he’d be screaming for these policies. Instead, he just uses these points to scold people and thinks he’s actually done something important.

Its not that you CAN'T become at least middle class if you dont follow these three rules, its that it can be much easier to obtain if you do. Seems like common sense, but by these comments it may not be.

What were the 3 things best to learn? Statistics, something, and something. Help me out.

These are not rules for success... they're rules to not be in extreme poverty.

You know, I followed all of those "rules for success." I never got into trouble, did drugs, had sex, anything like that. I even graduated from college summa cum laude. And I was doing absolutely terribly until I went to teach in China. I had to cancel my health insurance and close my savings account because, in spite of working several jobs for a total of over 40 hours a week (jobs which I held down for multiple years, by the way), I wasn't able to earn enough money to afford basic living expenses, partially because I was constantly having car troubles and didn't have the option of not having a car because public transportation was effectively nonexistent. I was fortunate enough to have middle class parents who could lend me money when I needed it, as well as other privileges that helped me survive my financial difficulties, but it was still a really shitty situation. And even in the midst of freaking out over car repairs and rent and health insurance, I kept thinking about what it must be like for people who *don't* have middle class parents who can bail them out. So yeah, even if you are able to follow the rules (which not everyone is), that doesn't guarantee success.

I wish I hadn't done those 3 very things and wasn't now making 6 figures. I slept so well in my mother's basement.

I personally trust Ben on this, but can someone link me to his sources so I can cite something more objective when debating with my friends?

more like 3 rules of how not to be poor, right?

1) I graduated from HS
2) I didn't have children before getting married
3) I got a job
Today, I'm a retired 59 year old and a multi-millionaire.
The formula works, especially in America.

Is he quoting a study saying that this is normally true?

I don’t like that he said “get married”. I know that he meant to just be financially stable before you have a kid but some snowflakes would take offense his word choice.

All I have to do to become middle class is not drop out of high school and not have a kid out of wedlock? Then why do we hear all the time about unemployed college grads? Yeah, if you "get a job" you can become middle class, but step three is a lot harder to control by yourself than the first two. Society chooses to give you free education from K-12, a baby is something you choose to make, no one has to choose to give you a decent job.
