Metallica performs "Would?" by Alice In Chains at MoPOP's Founders Award fundraiser.

The Museum of Pop Culture's one-night-only annual benefit event streamed for FREE on Tuesday, December 1, 2020 with an unforgettable performance from Seattle's own Alice In Chains, plus an acclaimed lineup of tribute artists who put their own spin on some of the band's most iconic songs.

The Founders Award event serves as the nonprofit museum’s principal annual fundraiser for youth development programs, access initiatives, community engagement, and world-class exhibitions.

This year’s celebration featured performances by award recipients Alice In Chains, as well as tribute performances from Chris Chaney (Jane’s Addiction), Billy Corgan (The Smashing Pumpkins), Dallas Green (City and Colour), Fishbone, Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters), KORN, Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees, Mad Season), Ann Wilson, Duff McKagan (Guns n’ Roses), Mastodon, Metallica, Dave Navarro, Krist Novoselic (Nirvana, Giants in the Trees), Corey Taylor (Slipknot), Kim Thayil (Soundgarden), Nancy Wilson, and the debut musical performance of Lily Cornell Silver (daughter of Chris Cornell and Susan Silver), among many others. The event also featured appearances from members of Pearl Jam, Sammy Hagar, Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine, Audioslave), Les Claypool, Robert Downey Jr., and many more.

The event also included appearances by artists from MoPOP’s 21-and-under music showcase and competition Sound Off!, including Katyrose Jordan, The Human Missile Crisis, David’s Van, and Talaya.

Friends don't let friends only play half of an AIC song.

It's the other versions of this song that make us realize how powerful Stanley's voice was

When he hits that “then” that is definitely Hetfield from the 90s

Good to see Kirk take time out of his scarecrow duties.

It's amazing how good James sounds here. His voice is actually improving as he gets older and we're lucky to have Metallica in our lives! Loved Alice in Chains too.

What I love about hearing James sings songs like this is seeing all the vocal techniques he has to use to make it work. The guy was not a naturally gifted singer and has had to work his arse off for years to learn how to do it. It's great watching him put that knowledge and experience to work to overcome his short comings.

I haven't listened to Metallica in years.
I can't believe James Hetfield can to this very day sing like that!

James' singing pretty damn impressive on this one. He hit a pretty high note for him in the "see it once my part.

Legend has it that Kirk left Hogwarts during the “sorting ceremony” to make it to this performance...

Tbh I think James is actually the closest. He’s the only one that has that distortion in his voice when singing this song. The others just don’t have that distortion in their voice. It’s too smooth. Well damn. Well Done James!

James' voice keeps getting better and better. They are paying their respects. Really Don't get the hate towards this awesome cover.

I'm 50 years old and I have been listening to Metallica for 37 years and they just keep getting better and better. To me, this band is nothing short of perfect! The memories that I have with my friends listening to this band is without a doubt some of the greatest times in my life. I will listen to this band until the pass because they are apart of the days that matter most to

I like how they had both electric and acoustic guitars. I think that is more of a tribute to Jerry's style than anything else in this. It's like if this song was released on Sap instead of Dirt.

Actually was quite impressed with this. James sounds great. The arrangement is a bit different. It's a good cover.

Kirk: oh so i should wear the hat?
Lars: totally man, it makes you look badass.
Rob: giggling, yeah bro do it.
James: fuck the hat....
Kirk: I'm gonna wear the hat.

Everyone watching: wtf is kirk wearing?

I'd love an acoustic cover album like this from the boys.

Props to James for adapting his voice over time to something more reasonable for his vocal chords to handle. Proof your singing doesn’t have to be “crazy”. It just has to sound good for the song it’s in.
