As a Aircraft Mechanic I have tried out the seat cushions in water, once water logged it may barely keep your head out of the water but it will definitely help.
And a couple more tips from someone that has taken aircraft cabins apart many times. The air from the air vent may be somewhat filtered but the hoses that the air passes through do not get cleaned and are very dirty inside, I always turn mine off. Also the potable water tanks that are used for your tea and coffee, are not cleaned very often. I choose to only have a drink from something that was bottled. The great cup of coffee can wait till I'm at my destination.

Note that a direct flight does NOT mean it won't make a stop or two. Direct just means you will not change planes at any of its stops. This is a very common misconception. If you want to only take off and land once, choose a nonstop flight.

Yes, I always wear my seatbelt when seated. I bring my own wipes to wipe things down when I board. I bring my own travel blanket, which I wash after my flight. One tip I haven’t heard mentioned, which I learned the hard way, is don’t wear pants that don’t gather at the ankle. Loose bottom or wide bottom pants will end up touching the floor if you sit or squat to use the toilet. I travel with a small cross body bag that I pull out of my carry-on and wear during the flight. I keep the essentials of phone, ID, hand sanitizer, hand lotion, tissue, and lip balm so I don’t have to keep pulling my bag out from under the seat. You are welcome. 😊

OK you wanted some comments…..former charter jet pilot here.
Never ever use the blankets….they are hardly ever cleaned at all.
Always have your seatbelt on.
While the back of the aircraft is probably the safest place to be in the event of a crash, I t’s probably a better idea to be able to get out of the airplane quickly. For that reason, I typically sit over the wing next to the emergency wing exit, because I know how to open the thing, I’ll be the first one out, and I’ll be able to assist others.
The modern lavatory on your typical jet aircraft is not large enough for the mile high club, so don’t even try.
Be really nice to the flight attendants. They have a tough job.
Try to chill out….nobody wants to have to duct tape you to your seat.
HTH.

Having survived a plane crash-landing in water with my small kiddos, I always check to make sure there are life jackets and an infant life preserver on board (and that I know where to locate it). It’s always wise to listen to the flight attendants’s safety briefing on every flight.

I always wear my seatbelt. My father-in-law was a structural engineer in the airline industry, and told me about the safest seats in the airplane (behind the wings because they take the brunt of the crash). P.S. thank you for the additional tips!

I always take two pashmina shawls. One for my pillow and the second as a blanket. The tray table cover is genius.

Wear hearing protection. Engine noise makes you tired and raises your blood pressure. You can hear people talking right through the hearing protection.

I've been an air traveller for decades. I can barely stand flying anymore. The _destination_ is okay, but *not* getting from A to B!

I am a former flight attendant and I have sat in the very last row of the Concorde from London to NY. Years ago. No problem at all and the service was great!

Personally having a seat that doesn't recline wouldn't matter to me as I never recline my seat anyway, even for an 8 hour flight. My doctor recommends a 90 degree angle for less back pain. Being closer to the washrooms is also a benefit in my opinion, no awkward long walks up and down the aisle. I also wear a seat belt during the flight. I bring my own pillow and wear warm clothes.

Hi Megan, thank you for the tips.
I always keep my seat belt on, it's not uncomfortable 👍
I also select a window seat 💺 and wipe down the area along the window where I would rest my head. 😊

I've asked for the back seats. I travel with a small service dog and most times on longer flights we have had the entire row to stretch out in. Works out well for me.

I always keep seatbelt on. For years I have disinfected my personal area on flights. Pre-COVID I used to get looks from people, now everyone is doing it!

I flew cross country with two small children and we just happened to end up in the very back row. It was ideal for us, as I was able to use the restroom quickly without worrying about leaving the kids unattended - and my son wasn't afraid to go by himself since I was so close. Also the flight attendant said I was heroic to manage the flight without the hubs and gave me a free glass of wine 🙂

When you get older and your world revolves around being close to a bathroom, sitting in back by the bathrooms is a plus. Plus, you can often be seated first. Once, I was on a plane with a backdoor by the tail. The people in back got to get off first, just like first class in the front.

The slip over tray table cover sounds very interesting. I didn't even consider that such a product existed, and it sounds like something every traveler would want to have. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

I just flew Oman Air from Muscat to Delhi in the rear window seat. I seemed to have more leg room than others and the seat reclined beautifully. I also only had one passenger next to me, a lovely young Indian man. At check-in I was offered the chance to move to a middle seat somewhere else, but I wanted the window. Thank you Oman Air for a great flight...🙏

I always wear a seatbelt. It's not uncomfortable, even when sleeping.

When I used to fly only economy I ALWAYS booked the seats in one of the 2 last rows at the back of the plane
