Lung scarring and oxygen in systemic sclerosis

Показать описание
Explaining about lung scarring (pulmonary fibrosis) and oxygen treatment requirements in systemic sclerosis (scleroderma) affecting the lungs. Lung scarring is relatively common in systemic sclerosis and can sometimes get worse over time (progress). There is anti-scarring (anti-fibrotic) medication available (nintedanib) which can slow down progression, even if it does not represent a cure. However it can result in stability of lung function especially when combined with treatments for systemic sclerosis given by the rheumatologist.
Oxygen therapy may also be required when the lung scarring is extensive or when pulmonary hypertension develops. Pulmonary hypertension represents high pressure between the heart and the lungs, which can affect the blood circulation through the lungs and reduce oxygen levels in the blood (especially on exertion).
