Windows 98 doesn't run on new hardware, even virtualized!

Well, hello everyone! Since I got my new pc 1 week ago, I tried to install Windows 98 on a vm. But, it didn't seemed to work. Do you have any idea why? Personally, I don't know. But who knows. This may just be a compatibility issue after all. And it also has some pretty special payloads...
PC Specs:
Intel® Core™ i7-11800H 8 cores 16 threads @2.3GHz
32 GB DDR4 RAM @3200MHz (dual channel)
1 TB WD SN730 NVMe PCIe Gen 3 SSD
RTX 3080 Mobile 16 GB VRAM

Songs: Kozah - Cali4nia, Clarx - Shakedown, steventhedreamer - Digadig
As always, thanks for watching! :)

I can confirm this issue on my machine as well (it is an Intel one). I can tell you that basically any dos-based OS's older than Windows ME do not work (as well as Windows NT 3.x). It is not a driver issue, it is likely due to a (some) change in the CPU itself at some point that broke compatibility with those older OSes. Although it only seems to be an Intel issue, since I tried installing 98 on an older AMD laptop and it worked fine.

(And if your wondering yes Windows ME does work)

Good thing, people have created patches and such to fix the CPU compatibility issues

It's due to redesigned core architecture in Intel's Coves and AMD's Zens when compatibility was stretched to such a limit that CPU designers' implementation to newer instruction sets/ more efficient cycles / fixing enormous Spectre-like bugs break some instructions (or change their behavior) that early MS C compilers / other compilers / older systems in general use. Also, I tried running Windows 98 under double virtualization layers (Vbox in Windows 7 under Vbox in Windows 10) and it works.

when you are in the last part of setup (time zones) restart and go into safe mode, then right like "my computer" and to go properties, performance, file system, troubleshooting then enable "disable all 32-bit protected-mode disk drivers" then it will go as normal. you cant use the cd drive tho. if you want to use the cd drive, disable it. this works for me, hope this helps anyone who wants to run Windows 98!

This is where true emulators like QEMU or maybe PCem come in.

I have Windows 98 in DosBox-X and Windows ME in VMware Player, both work absolutely fine ‒ I have Intel i3 CPU.

I know !!! go to safe mode --> control pannel --> system --> performance --> file system... --> troubleshooting --> check mark disabled all 32-bit protected-mode disk drivers ! and now restart to normal and there are no errors.

Bit late to the party, but it depends on the kind of VM software you use. For example, i use PCem v17 (which came out a few months before this video did), along with a fairly old version of virtual box. 9X based OS'es work fine on them, along with ones that are older than that. It's just VMware, that would've been causing the issue when you did this video, not sure how it'd be now since i haven't used VMware in a while. But yes, that's one reason it could've been acting up.

It is enough to turn off the machine after going to the configuration of the machine and once the configuration is opened you go to the section where it says system and once where it says acceleration and deactivate the enable nested pagination box and give it to accept and that's it

I heard 98 has issues with AMD CPUs so if you have an AMD CPU then that explains it. You can use PCem as it is an emulator, not a virtualization program

I once installed Windows 1.0 on a new pc and it worked fine for me.

yeah, windows 98 does not run on new hardware, virtualized, even my laptop. Windows 98 only runs on old hardware. and i don't want to find its ISO. Update: Now, i only have 1 virtualized OS.

Wait a sec… 1GB ram!??! That’s a lot of ram at the time!?! 1GB ram in 1998 is like something maybe like 128GB ram today. Weird..

It can run to a point, but its fudged. All you should need to do is boot Windows 98 into safe mode (can be done by resetting the vm and holding left-CNTL and entering safemode from the list), rightclicking properties via My Computer, Troubleshooing, File System and disabling 32-bit protected mode drivers. There may be times even with this done that Windows 98 may still act up during normal usage but it at least works.

I was able to confirm that using VMware Workstation Player 16 on my Dell Inspiron 3505 laptop with a 2019 AMD Ryzen 7 CPU with Radeon Vega integrated graphics running Windows 11. I tried installing Windows 98 on a VM but it went into errors, even with multiple ISOs and attempts. I even used a pre-built VM and it did crash.

When I try installing Win98 on my Virtualbox, it doesn’t work, everytime i’m done with the setup, explorer.exe (the goddamn ui) crashes. which makes it unusable, can someone tell me if theres an actual solution for this?

I guess I'll have to stay with my i7-4790 forever then, since I need to be able to run all Windows versions for my YouTube videos.
