When I married my wife I was a 27 year old single father with two young children, She was 5 years my senior with a teen aged son. We soon started knotting heads. We didn't want a divorce and went for counseling. Lucky for us both he was an older guy who had been around the block. He told us we were in a power struggle. He asked my wife if I was fulfilling the role as husband, and father and she said yes. What he said next saved our marriage. He told her then it was time for her to RELAX and let me lead. He said it was normal for her to try to lead because she had too for so many years but didn't need to anymore. To her credit she listened and our marriage smoothed out. 12 years into the marriage I was offered a job in another state which meant she had to quit her career. We talked it over and I decided to take it. My mother asked her if she was going to allow me to move. To her credit her answer was where John goes I go. We spent 20 years there before I retired. My wife never worked another day outside the home. We are still married.

This makes me wonder about this woman's mind... 6 months after becoming a mother she starts treating her husband like one of her children. So if a man does not claim his leadership role in the family he becomes another one of the children the mother/wife needs to look after... And then all respect leaves.

My problem was never my wife. It was my wife's feminist sisters and mother. They found out real quick one day never to step out of line with me. Now they are scared to death of me. Word of advice, and this is something I see guys never doing.

In all my relationships, I tell the woman early on that I'm not sleeping on the couch if she's pissed at me. I'm sleeping in my own damn bed. If you're pissed at me, you sleep on the couch. The only time I'm going to be there is if I'M pissed off at YOU. And I follow through.

Don't care if she gets petty and won't let me sleep, eventually I get pissed off enough to go to the couch on my own if they're being childish. Funny how it recontextualizes the situation, and I almost always get an apology first thing in the morning.

Moral of the story is if you disrespect yourself, don't expect anyone else to respect you. He needed this kick in the ass to get his family in order. I'm not even shocked or surprised that she disrespected him. That's just in a woman's nature towards weak men.
