Why is there assumed to be a "1" left in the numerator? If you think about it, it seems like it wouldn't be unreasonable to view it as 1x? Do you get what I'm saying, or do I sound nuts?

Why do you need to prove a basic exponent property, meaning it's given by definition? BTW, your proof is wrong.
