Did Judas receive the Eucharist at the Last Supper, and if he did, why would Jesus allow him to receive while in the state of mortal sin?

In this video, Clement Harrold answers this tricky question by presenting the three main theological approaches to this question. Clem- siding with St. Augustine & St. Thomas Aquinas- argues the third approach is the most logical.

The third approach Clem takes addresses both questions of Judas receiving and why Jesus would allow Judas to receive. The Gospels provide the evidence to support Judas receiving the Eucharist. Regarding the second question, Clem argues that Christ did allow Judas to receive the Eucharist in the state of mortal sin. According to Aquinas, Jesus did so because He was serving as a purposeful example to priests when they have to discern if a communicant is in the state of mortal sin before giving them communion at Mass.

And the 4th option could also just simply be for Jesus to provide a living example to us all of just how serious it can be to eat and drink the body and the blood of the Lord in an unworthy manner. Jesus called Judas "The Son of Perdition" and said it would have been better for him to have never been born. That's worth reflecting on BEFORE we partake of our Lord in the Eucharist!

We have a good holy priest here in Ireland who has refused to give the Eucharist to an unrepentant politician who supports abortion.

Maybe Jesus gave it to him because it was Judas' choice. Judas has free will. He can choose to accept it or reject it. He chose to accept it. Jesus honored his choice.

It’s only after the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ did the apostles come to understand the workings of Christ and the Eucharistic celebration not before!!

I think we need to reflect upon when Jesus spoke of the sabbath and how mankind tends to place our own ideologies on how things should be or shouldn't be done.

On The other hand. maybe it was as described for All my 57 years, Judas did eat Their Supper. They would still be in each others company for about an hour before The First Mass. In this time Jesus Announced his betrayal and then sends Judas away.

Great video my guy I would also like to add that another reason Jesus allowed judas to partake is most likely because Jesus told everybody that there was a traitor but not saying who because he wanted to keep it a secret and if he gave the Eucharist to everyone but judas it be pretty obvious who the traitor is but what do you think about that

To clear a few things up, the institution of the Eucharist took place during the Last Supper, not after. And John 13 is abundantly clear that Judas had interiorly decided to betray Jesus before the Last Supper took place, which is what Our Lord said during the washing of the feet. So if Judas committed a mortal sin, we can be fairly sure the consent was given before receiving Holy Communion not after. He also said "what you're going to do, do quickly" - which implies there had been some planning going on beforehand. Plus, it also says the devil induced Judas to betray Jesus, but then the devil entered Judas after taking the morsel, which sounds like he was convinced at first, then actually possessed after receiving holy communion. I don't know why Jesus allowed Judas to receive the Eucharist, it's bothered me before (I guess St. Thomas' answer makes the most sense but it still doesn't sit right to me)....but it led to the cause for our salvation!

Excellent.
I would like to have the source of these theories which you explain in your talk.
Could you give the source of these theories, please?
Thank you
May God bless you

I think we can look at the passover, the last supper, st Paul’s eucharist, the didache, and justin Martyr. What we see is a refinement of doctrine, a refinement of the elements, a transition into group offerings, confession, all these things become more developed as time progresses but the basic elements are all there. I like to think the apostles were made to confess in some fashion. Jesus knowing of Judas’ sins is one thing but responding to the one’s he willingly confessed is another. He took the eucharist willingly and i think on some level he knew his sin had tainted the experience for him.

Maybe it was Judas’ very last hope to come back by an act of charity.. He does feel remorse after having sinned, rejects his tainted reward, but then forsakes his own life out of desperation… But Jesus came to atone for the sins of the world by dying instead of us.. The rest is up to Jesus. It’s a tough one for anyone else to know for sure.

If you want to know why please read the book The Mystical City of God written by the venerable Maria of Agreda. In order of the holy mother Mary herself. All your questions will be answered. Everything from just her immaculate conception till her assumption is there.

There’s a forth bit of “information” that is not inconsistent with your conclusion… in The Mystical City of God, written by Venerable Mary of Agreda, the Virgin Mary may well have revealed to her that she had an Angel recover the the Eucharist from Judas before he could consume It/Him… because she did not want him to suffer the eternal consequences of such an act… and, of course, because of her great love for her son and for His Most Holy Body. It’s not the same as sacred as Sacred Scripture, but certainly worth reflection.

Jesus did give Judas the Eucharist; it was his damnation. Many do not realize that the Eucharist is Jesus True Body and Blood; it is the greatest Gift He gave us at the Last Supper! However, we must ourselves be in a State of Grace(that is without unconfessed mortal Sin on our souls) in order to receive the blessing and graces Jesus wishes to give. If we, like Judas the betrayer; receive in a state of mortal sin; it becomes a curse and NOT a Blessing! I almost never hear this Truth spoken at Mass, and those who do not believe the Eucharist is Truly Jesus Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity also do not receive a blessing if they receive, also if you are not Catholic, do not receive! " Blessed are You who Believed". these words spoken by Elizabeth, who was Filled with the Holy Spirit; to our Blessed Mother.

John’s eyewitness account shows that Jesus dismissed Judas Iscariot BEFORE instituting the Memorial meal! Jesus, knowing that Judas was his betrayer, dipped a morsel of the Passover meal and handed it to Judas, instructing him to leave. (John 13:21-30) Mark’s account also intimates this order of events. (Mark 14:12-25) Jesus then passed the bread and wine to the remaining 11 apostles, telling them to eat and drink. (Luke 22:19, 20) Afterward, he spoke to them as “the ones who have stuck with me in my trials, ” a further indication that Judas had been dismissed. (Luke 22:28)
