Why Is Food Packaged The Way It Is?

Weird History Food is getting into the packaging of your favorite foods. Sometimes, logical reasons exist for what seem to be frustrating package designs. Who knew that air in chip bags served a purpose? On the other hand, you might be disappointed to find out that some of the biggest grievances in the snacking product design world come down to a company being stuck in its ways - and not really wanting to innovate.

And here I am, still not knowing why hot dogs are sold in packs of 8 while hot dog buns are in packs of 6.

The dark bottles for beer is the same thing for vegetable oils. The oils won't go rancid in a dark brown bottle as fast as if the bottle is clear.

I like this narrator too. She pronounces all the letters. Also, loved popping open the half air filled bag of chips when I was a kid.

I love that capri sun is a unit of measure. I do that with my middle school students. Using random stuff as a way for them to visualize how big/heavy something is

Great insight, I've always known about the potato chips packaging, I hear a lot of people complain about "getting ripped off" I'm like there's still the proper amount stated IN the package, the rest if to protect the product and still they don't get it...what ya gonna do (sigh)

Cook up all the bacon, put excess in wax paper and a freezer bag. When you want some, throw it in the microwave or crisp in a pan. No waste

LOVED whacking the Pillsbury tube. Hated out when they made them self-popping. I hate being startled so I'd hold tube above my head with elbows covering my ears while I peeled off foiled label. YIKES!!!!

And my old mom was sure they filled the meat pads with water to make the package heavier so they could charge you more. She was a bigger cynic than I! ;-)

I worked at a liqour store and wondered regularly why the bitters had such an obnoxious label. Thanks for informing me.

I can't hear the term "making biscuits" anymore without thinking of a cat

I always assumed the bitters packaging was about brand recognition, but I didn't realize that it happened because of a mistake / miscommunication. I like that a lot actually!

VERY interesting and did answer some mysteries in food packaging: especially the "meat diaper".

Both Wright and Smithfield bacon comes in re-sealable "ziplock" packages. It is vacuum sealed but once opened, it can be reclosed.

I cut the bacon bag in half (down the middle) with food scissors and freeze one side in a glass bowl. It works best. Yes, bacon strips will be half sized but I do not mind it at all. It fits perfectly in the skillet.
