Tama S.L.P. Series G-Maple Snare Drum Review by Sweetwater Sound

In this video I am demonstrating the Tama S.L.P. Series G-Maple Snare. It is one lively sounding snare drum that is ideal for fast paced music like ska or drum-n-bass, but is also equally ideal for styles like funk, gospel, and hip-hop. Tama's S.L.P. series makes it possible for you to find your ideal snare drum sound by the way they put specific components together for distinct sounds. Whatever style of music you play you will find the right snare drum in the Tama S.L.P line.

This G-Maple drum is 7" x 13", 13 plies, 10mm thick, with a beautiful Tamo Ash outer veneer. With the discrete brass tube lugs and natural finish of the Tamo Ash veneer you really getting one nice looking drum. There are other very nice hardware features like the die-cast Steel Mighty Hoops which definitely add to the crack and projection the drum has. They also gave the snare an easy to use ratchet style throw-off, removable butt plate, and 20-strand Starclassic carbon-steel snappy snares. All of those things put together give this drum a bright, crisp, and powerful sound.

It also feels really nice to play. It is sensitive enough for buzz rolls and ghost strokes but powerful enough for the rim shots to cut through the mix.

There are a lot of great drums in the Tama S.L.P. line. If you are looking for a snare with great feel, attack, and tone then you should definitely check out this 7" x 13" G-Maple snare. Thanks for watching!

You know what I like about Nick's reviews on drums? He actually hits the damn things like he means it! I personally cannot stand watching those review videos when they do little soft things a million times and you don't get a good idea of what the drum sounds like. This is my personal opinion, but I play decently hard and I want to know what drums sound like when someone is really feeling it when they play, Not just doing rudiments .

These SLP snares come with Tama's own drum key, which has become my favorite drum key. I have a pearl drum key that came with my shift eliminator pedal a few years ago, a couple of gibraltar drum keys, a yamaha drum key, and couple of basic $2.00 cheapo drum keys. The Tama drum key fits lugs very well, has a nice weight to it, rounded edges that don't cut in to your fingers, and a top grooved part that lets you spin the key fast when you get the lugs loose to take them off, and while you're in the beginning portion of adding tension. Very well thought out design, probably designed by a drummer.

You guys do some of the best snare demos. This guy's enthusiasm really makes the snares sing. :)

I play a whole bunch of metal music, and this thing has a surprisingly full-bodied sound for that stuff if you don't crank the heads. All while remaining sensitive to ghost notes. Real solid snare drum. I'm not sure I'm ever gonna need another one.

Really wish Tama would add a g-maple 14 inch snare to the slp lineup that’s not limited edition, preferably 14x6.5. They have released a few that were limited and sold out right away. Not a fan of 13 inch snares but LOVEEE tama’s g maple snares. I have the g bubinga which is my favorite wood snare ever. Much prefer the thicker g maple shells compared to the slp classic maple. Also have the Tama slp dynamic bronze which is incredible and last but not least I own the Tama slp Black brass which is my metal snare ever. Saving up for the g-walnut 14x6.5 snare which sounds amazing from what I’ve heard and seen nothing but rave reviews about it. Tama slp is just such an amazing line, affordable price for top notch quality and very creative innovative ideas. There’s something for any style drummer in the slp line.
