There's nothing like a good sleep system to stay warm in cold weather. But if you're doing it hobo style, you may not have that option. In this video I explore hobo hacks for staying warm.

Former 50 of 74 years a hobo. The best way I found to stay warm is to head south as far as possible during winter. I know that's not always possible for some however. The type of sleeping bag you have makes a big difference also. Of course a mummy style bag is the warmest style. I used a 20 or 30 degree bag all year round .In warm weather I would sleep on top rather than inside. I bought them off season when they were on sale from places like Big Lot or Walmart which made them fairly cheap. I figured 3 years or so use out of one so it was a reasonable investment. I got one of those blue ground pad also. Helped a hell of a lot. Cardboard makes a great and free ground pad, I would start out with one and then add one more when i headed back to a camp site come nightfall. 3 - 4 deep is about as good as it gets. Often there were places that gave out cheap thin gray blankets for the homeless. One over a cheap sleeping bag really can make a difference. I found a tarp if rigged right was as good as a tent if not better. No condensation to speak of. I use those cheapo Walmart/Big Lot blue tarps and pitch them low as possible. Like just high enough to crawl into your sleeping bag. I would cut the cardboard into thin strips and add to a fire when when my itchy feet started in. A tin can of hot coffee/ broth in the morning or at night would help warm you up also. The blanket I would give away on my way out of town so it got recycled for a useful propose..

A lightweight wood-burning or alcohol stove to make a hot drink will be a lifesaver, you can make them from a cat food can and a paper punch, and you can get 20 boils from one bottle of HEET. There's how to videos on YT. People rarely mention this when touching upon this subject and I don't know why. You can get a 10x2 foot roll of reflectix insulation (bubble wrap sandwiched between mylar) and put that beneath your pad. It goes a long way toward combatting convective heat loss, and is light and inexpensive. Also, don't compress your down puffy with a heavier layer over top. Down needs to loft to hold heat. A light rain jacket or windbreaker on top will help maximize it's heat retention. If you're going to use a trash bag to add warmth, use it inside the sleeping bag, as a vapor barrior. Best wishes from MI.

Love your videos. I'm sure that as the months and years go by, that more and more people will become homeless due to inflation, job loss, divorce, economy crashing, and CBDC. Prepare, prepare, prepare is all that we can do and know the more skills that we can acquire the better off that we'll be in the long run. I have a job, home and fiancé, but that could all change in an instant. We never know what life holds. Read your Bible and trust in Christ as your savior. God Speed!

In the wintertime, I always try to park under something, anything; this inhibits loss of longwave radiation (heat) to the atmosphere.
